Arsenal vs Porto: Cesc is out of the Porto match

Cesc Fabregas will not be part of the Arsenal squad for this week’s Champions League match against Porto, due to a hamstring injury. He was subbed off in Saturday’s match against Burnley as a precaution, but unfortunately he won’t be able to participate.

Wenger said:

“Cesc is ruled out for tomorrow’s game,” said the manager.

“He has a hamstring problem and we could not even take a gamble with him.

“I was hoping [he would recover] after the game because we were cautious with him. He was not adamant about coming out of the team but still he has damaged his hamstring and we cannot take a gamble on him.

Almunia, the the pre-match conference stated that Arsenal would be able to win without Cesc:

“Cesc is the spirit of this team, he is our captain and a fantastic player. When he is not on the pitch we miss him a lot. All the players are convinced, and 100 per cent committed to go through this game.”

I hope he is back for the game against Hull. Wenger did not mention how long Cesc would be out for. Do you think this injury lessens Arsenal’s chances of winning against Porto?

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

Arsenal went joint top of the Premier League table with a win against Burnley today. Cesc scored for Arsenal shortly after the half hour mark. Nugent scored for Burnley at the start of the second half to level the scoreline. However, ten minutes later Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead, and Arshavin finished off the game with a goal in the last minute of the match. Full match report here.

Cesc was subbed shortly after scoring the first goal. He was hobbling on the pitch, and bbc 5live said that he was taken off as a precautionary measure because he tweaked his hamstring. Fingers crossed he will be fine for Wednesday’s game.

Friendly: France – Spain 0-2 + pics!!

The Spainish National Team played a friendly match against France in Marseilles yesterday. European Champions won that game 2-0, with David Villa and Sergio Ramos being the scorers. Cesc Fabregas was in first team for Spain! You can read the match report here.

Arsenal 3-1 Stoke (Post match interview video + pics)

Arsenal beat Stoke 3-1 in their Premier League fixture. Stoke scored first, but shortly after Bendtner equalised. Aaron Ramsey was carried off the pitch due to a horrifc injury in the second half. Fabregas later scored a penalty, and Vermaelen secured the victory in the last minutes of the match.Full match report here.

Arsenal 2-0 Sunderland (Video and Pictures)

Arsenal hosted Sunderland at home today in their Premier League fixture, coming away with three points.

Arsenal pretty much dominated play, creating many chances of which two were converted. The first goal was scored by Bendtner in the 27th minute, with Eboue assisting. In the second half, once again Arsenal had many chances but they were failing to make a break through. Victory was eventually secured in last few minutes of the match, with Fabregas scoring a penalty.Full match report here.

Cesc Fabregas on the catwalk for Haiti fundraiser

Cesc took part in the charity fundraiser for Naomi’ Campbell’s ‘Fashion for Relief Haiti’ yesterday night in London. Other stars at the event included Andrew Flintoff, Piers Morgan (Cesc got a picture with both of them), Kate Moss,James Cordon, Larry Lamb,Annabelle Neilson, Jamelia and Jozy Altidore.

Sky sports news showed a clip of Cesc on the catwalk. Reddevilsworshipper put up a clip of the video which was posted on Kickette so all credit goes to them.Click here to see the video.

I will be uploading the pictures to the photogallery soon, but for the time being I will post some of them as thumbnails throughout this post.

Cesc’s comments on Porto and Fabianski

Cesc has backed Fabianski, after his performance during the first leg game against Porto:

“He is strong and we have to be there for him.We haven’t seen him because he is doing doping [tests] but we have to be next to him. Sometimes when you are young in a big game, these things happen to you. You can be a little bit down but the team will be 100 per cent behind him and help him in the next game to come back to his best.

“He is a very good keeper. He had his chance today and sometimes it doesn’t go your way. It didn’t go his way but we will stand up and support him until the end because he is a good character and I am sure he will be back.Whenever he has to play, I am sure he will do well.”

Cesc has also said that Arsenal are not favourites to win the second leg.

“There are no favourites in football.Porto are winning so if you want to call someone favourites they are because they are winning 2-1.”

“But we don’t look at it that way, we just want to play the game. We have to consider the Premier League again, then the national team, the League again and then the Champions League. Then we will talk about it.

“You never like to lose and we felt we were doing well. We came back and were controlling the game. These things happen – I don’t know if it was the referee’s mistake or ours but this is football. Now we have to come back at Emirates Stadium.”

Barcelona

There are a few more quotes about Cesc and Barcelona. First up, Pique has been speaking about Cesc.
“I still do not know if he will come here next season, but one day he will wear the Barca shirt again because he is a fan and I know that he wants to come back in the future.He is a player that should play here and he wants to come, but we will have to wait and see when that is.”

Laporta when questioned about signing Cesc stated:
â€œHe is not a temptation. Arsenal came fishing for our young players. One of them was Cesc. Now he is playing very well at Arsenal. I canâ€™t say any more about this.â€

Arsenal played Porto in their first leg of the last 16 Champions League tie, losing 2-1.

Fabianski scored an own goal from Varela’s cross in the 11th minute.Five minutes later, Arsenal equalised. Nasri’s corner kick was flicked on by Vermalen, and Rosicky then passed the ball on to Campbell who headed it into the net. Fabianski prevented Micael from scoring in the 29th minute, and at the other end Porto’s goalkeeper, Helten, tipped over Bendtner’s shot.

At the start of the second half, Rosicky had a penalty shout when he was tripped in the box, which was not granted. Soom after Porto scored their second goal of the game, which would eventually ensure their victory. Fabianski picked up Campbell’s back pass inside the penalty area. Porto’s free kick for that mistake was taken quickly, resulting in Falcao scoring. Full match report here.

After the match, Cesc was asked whether the controversial second goal should have been allowed. Cesc said, â€œI donâ€™t know. I have no idea to be honest. Maybe as a player I would have done the same.Schoolboyâ€™s goal, what can you do? Nothing, nothing to complain [about].â€

â€œAfter the second goal we went down, maybe we are still a little bit soft in that aspect as a team when we concede a goal maybe sometimes we are not strong enough to lift ourselves up.Thatâ€™s what happened really, we were not strong enough to stand up and play well but until the second goal I think we were having a very good game.â€

Concerning the match tonight, Porto’s midfielder Fernando Belluschi spoke about Cesc and said:
“Nobody doubts Cesc is their biggest player but he is not always going to be at his best.We are going to put a lot of pressure on him and stop him linking up with his attack. We have been preparing for some time and we’re ready for the battle.”

Cesc: Age is no excuse

There are also some quotes from Cesc in Arsenal’s last Official matchday programme in which he reflected on Arsenal’s performance so far:

“As a team, we need to be stronger.We can’t hide behind people saying we are too young or we have injuries. We just have to compete.People say you must learn from your mistakes, but you learn how to play football when you are 12, 13, 14, 15. You don’t learn these things when you are 25.Of course, you can still improve, always improve, but the basics must be there.If you play for Arsenal, it is because you have to have these attributes. That is why I do not believe age is an excuse.”

“In the past few years, we have been doing very well, but whenever it comes to important moments, maybe we haven’t been up where we need to be. We have always tried to play our football, but the goals we have conceded lately have come from defensive mistakes.”

â€œThereâ€™s nothing we can do about those last two results, except to move forwards and do well until the end of the season, and see where it takes us.The last few results are a step backwards, but itâ€™s not lost yet. We have to keep focus and try to go as far as we can.

â€œWe want to do well that is for sure, and get better and better, but remember these are teams [Manchester United & Chelsea] that have won things recently and in terms of experience of winning trophies they are more advanced than us.â€

Barcelona

There have been many news stories about Barcelona and Fabregas from the past few weeks, as many of you know. I have refrained from posting rumours, but I will be posting direct quotes from players and clubs.

First up, David Seaman gave his input on the rumours:

“I donâ€™t think he will leave if Arsenal donâ€™t win a trophy this season â€“ you donâ€™t get that sort of thing from your captain.

I think Cesc will be there for quite a while, as Patrick did, coming towards the end of your career, and then moving on.”

Arshavin also commented about the rumours:
‘I remember when there were rumors of his departure last summer, he said half-jokingly, half seriously: “I’ll stay at least a year or two, I want to play with you.” We joke about this topic again now. But Cesc is a grown man and only he can decide.’

Cesc’s father said, â€œIf something has to happen, we will see at the end of the season. We would talk.But to be talking about these [things] at the middle of the season … I understand Arsenal being angry.

“If a club is interested in a player, then it should go to the other club and try to negotiate. This is the way to function always.If this thing has to happen, it has to be this way: Barca [must] talk to Arsenal. That goes the same with Cesc and for the rest of the players.Imagine if this could happen to a Barca player. Everybody would be very annoyed with these speculations.

â€œThis is why I think that the best thing to do it is to leave this thing here, because Cesc belongs to Arsenal. I always think: do not do what you do not want them to do to you. The best thing to do now it is to kill this matter now and thatâ€™s it.â€

Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool, Post Match Interview+Video highlights+14 Pics

Arsenal beat Liverpool today in their Premier League fixture!The first half was rather dull with there not being many very chances, but the second half was much more lively, and resulted in a goal and win for Arsenal.

At the start of the second half both teams had chances, with Arshavin hitting the side netting and Lucas’s shot going over the bar. Gallas prevented a Liverpool attack with a well timed tackle, and on the other end Rosicky was not able to convert a pass from Arshavin. the 72nd minute saw the first and only goal of the match, with Diaby converting Rosicky’s pass. Liverpool had a chance to equalise near the end of the match but Almunia tipped Babel’s strike over the crossbar. There were appeals for a penalty from Liverpool, after Gerrard’s set piece appeared to have hit Fabregas’s arm. Full match report here.
