Interview

Q:  No one more than you knows how hard it is to play in this World Cup.  First you had to recover from an injury in two months and now you’re fighting for a position that is eluding you.

A:  No one said it was going to be easy, but I arrived with all the hope in the world and I haven’t lost that.  No one should think that I’m going to give up.  I’m very competitive and I’m going to fight in all the training sessions to be an important part of this team.  I’m not thinking of anything else.  I had the best season of my life in Arsenal on an individual level this past season.

Q:  And even that didn’t matter.

A:  Football is like that.  And therefore I shouldn’t be satisfied with it.  I want to play 90 minutes in each game.  And although I will have to sacrifice things, I want to continue doing it.  I’m going to give it my all to achieve it.

Q:  Have you thought about why you’re not playing?

A:  Because the players that are here would be starters in 80% or more of the national teams in the World Cup.  There is more and more competition.  There are players here now that weren’t with Luis: Busquets, Piqué, Navas, Mata, Pedro… Although it may hurt me because I’m not playing, I don’t consider it a disadvantage, but rather an advantage.

Q:  You’ve improved physically.

A:  Yes.  My physique has changed.  Between the ages of 20 and 23, I’ve experienced a lot of changes.  My speed and power have improved.  I feel much stronger.  Last year, when I injured my knee, I started working out in the gym.  I arrived at Arsenal at the age of 16 and I haven’t stopped playing since then.  They decided that since I was playing so many games, they shouldn’t overburden me physically to avoid a burnout.  I started working more last season and this one and I’ve noticed a great change.  I’m even surprised by how strong I am.

Q:  Enough that you should be starting against Honduras.

A:  That doesn’t depend on me.  But if you ask me if I’m physically able, then yes.  I’ve never missed any training session since I became part of the national team.  I’m ready to play, and I hope to play.  Having to come out after a defeat doesn’t scare me.

Q:  Yesterday, you said on Radio Marca that with Luis you were considered the 12th man and that you’re not satisfied with the 50 games that you’ve played with the team.

A:  I’ll respond in parts.  First, anyone who heard the entire interview knows that my words shouldn’t be misinterpreted or taken out of context.  I said what I said.  Also, you shouldn’t draw conclusions based on only a part of what I said.  Why would I complain about the coach?  He called me up for the World Cup after I was out for two months.  The last game I played was in March against Barça.  Hierro called me a lot, he was preoccupied about me.  I will always be grateful to del Bosque.  Everything else depends on me.  I’m the one that has to work now to show that the confidence that they’ve had in me is not in vain.

Q:  And on the issue of the 50 games, what do you want to clear up?

A:  First, I have to say that I don’t pay much attention to numbers.  Second, what I consider games are the ones I play from minute 1 to minute 90.  I’m quite strict with myself.  My mother called me yesterday after listening to the interview and asked why I had said what I did about the 50 games.  She told me that I have to be proud of playing 50 games by the age of 23.  And I am.  Really.
