Arsenal 2-2 Barcelona : Cesc scores a penalty

Arsenal played Barcelona in their Champions League fixture today. Barcelona led the way with two goals, but Arsenal pulled two back to bring the result to a draw. In the process of the match, Fabregas’s injury occured again.

The first half was pretty much dominated by Barcelona. They had numerous chances in the first half, many of which were saved by Almunia.

Messi had a chance at goal in the fifth minute, which rebounded off Almunia. A few moments later Ibrahimovic scuffed the best chance thus far. Almunia saved two more shots- one from Ibrahimovic and the other from Busquets.

Song then cleared Alves’ shot off the line. Arsenal’s first shot at goal arrived in the 23rd minute, with Nasri’s curling ball going narrowly wide.

Arshavin was subbed off for Eboue, after receiving an injury. Shortly before half time, Gallas also came off after aggravating his calf, and was replaced by Denilson. Also, Fabregas received a yellow card for his foul on Busquets, which means he will not play at the Nou Camp next week.

A couple of seconds into the second half, Barcelona went ahead with a goal from Ibrahimovic. Bendtner had a chance to equalise in the 53rd minute, but his header went into the hands of Valdes. Just before the hour mark, Ibrahimovic scored once again to bring the scoreline to 2-0.

Walcott was subbed on for Sagna, resulting in an immediate impact. Two minutes after coming on, Walcott drilled a low ball into the net. Henry then made his entry for Barcelona, receiving an applause from the Emirates crowd.

With six minutes left in the match, Arsenal were awarded a penalty, after Puyol bundled Cesc over in the box. Puyol was sent off in the process and Fabregas converted the penalty bringing the result to a draw. Cesc worsened the state of his knee whilst taking the penalty kick, but soldiered on through the remaining minutes of the game.

Walcott’s comments about Cesc and his injury after the match:

“Cesc is a solider and he is our captain.I don’t know what the damage is just yet, so fingers crossed, it won’t be bad.”
