Arsenal 1 Manchester United 2
29 August 2009
Arsenal and Manchester United met today at Old Trafford for the first “big clash” of the 2009/10 premier league season.
Both teams were missing a key player each, with Cesc Fabregas (hamstring) and Rio Ferdinand (thigh) not being included in the respective squads, all eyes were on this evening kick-off.
Manchester United started the game off on the upper hand in terms of possession but this hardly manifested as Arsenal were quick to the ball, denying Man Utd of finding their usual passing rhythm. Both teams looked to be working hard with what seemed to be a safety first approach.
Breakthrough came after 40 minutes when Arshavin received the ball with his back to goal and fashions something out of nothing. He takes two touches and sends a rocket of a shot into the top-right corner from distance. Brilliant goal! 1-0 Arsenal.
Manchester United sought to hit straight back with some heavy pressure, but nothing out of this as Arsenal stood firm in defence to see out the half-time whistle.
Arsenal started the second half on the front foot, with slick passing movements and two goal attempts. Van Persie was denied by a great stop by Foster while Eboue fell short of scoring Arsenal’s second.
Manchester United were awarded a penalty after Almunia came off his line and brings down Rooney. Debatable penalty but Rooney converts it to make the scoreline level at 1-1.
The game took a devastating turn after Van Persie’s free kick hit the bar only to lead on an United attack which lead to a Ryan Giggs free kick, which Diaby embarassingly heads into the back of the net. 2-1 lead to Manchester United.
Diaby had a chance to automatically correct his horrendous mistake with a great run into the box but falls short when his shot runs wide.
Arsenal did not lose their resolve ane kept the attacks going. Arsene Wenger tried to help the cause by substituting Arshavin, Eboue and Denilson for Bendtner, Eduardo and Ramsey.
A frantic end to the end of the match, with Arsenal throwing everything forward. Then comes a moment Arsenal fans have been waiting for when Van Persie scores, only for it to be rules offside. Both disappointment and frustration for the fans, players and manager. Arsene Wenger then gets “sent off” for kicking a water bottle down the touchline.
Final whistle blows. Scoreline 2-1 to Manchester United. Full mathc report here
Hugely disappointed about the scoreline as I thought Arsenal played brilliantly.

You’re welcome, I am happy to show Arsenal some support.
well….cristiano ronaldo was a diving superstar when he was with man u…did man u fan forget him so soon?
Bente……I did exactly what you do……I cheers for liverpool with my brother and then we cheers for Arsenal.
tq for cheering the gunners…..
I hate Mike Dean. What a disgrace he is to the refereeing world. And Diaby was also a disgrace. Diabolical Diaby! Almunia should have just let loony Rooney kick the ball out. The penalty was debatable. All these cost us the game. Bahhh.
We played so much better than ManUre and this make the defeat harder to accept. Oh and Eboue shouldn’t have made a dive. That was unacceptable.
I’m so proud of Wenger. I don’t envy him to stand there surrounded by the hateful ManUre fans.
Arsenal played much better than man united. Argh. It sucks when you play better but still end up losing. I’m proud of their overall performance. They gave it there all out there. Arsenal were just very unlucky.I hope this doesn’t lower their confidence too much. They played really well and should be proud. They have it in them to win something this season.
Mike dean was way too fussy. He gives out the most cards out of any of the other refs. We got 6!! Apparently that means arsenal will get a fine.
What a goal by Arshavin. He really is something. I have no idea how he does it. I feel sorry for diaby. That goal must be haunting him a lot. But at the same time, I’m a little annoyed because what the heck was he thinking?Rvp does well as a stand in captain. He was consoling diaby after that nightmare own goal.I think we had a good penalty shout too when Arshavin went down in the box. But no way are arsenal going to be awarded any penalties any time soon.
What was eboue doing with that dive. I thought he had cut out the diving already. It was really embarassing to see that.
And lol at man united fans booing eduardo. One word: Ronaldo. Sheesh. Football fans really are hypocritical.
Rukhsana- Me too! When arsene went to the platform and spread his arms out in a what do i do now i was like ‘yeah, you tell them!’ What a legend.I love him. <3 There was really no need to send him to the stands.
Bente- thanks for your comment
It’s always great to hear other supporters acknowledging an opposing team. Thanks.
mike dean vs arsenal 2-1
I completely agree with that..it was horrible calling. Yes, we made mistakes but the ref decided this game. Arsenal was the better team and should of won. I was so disappointed I almost cried.
Why does everyone love ManU so much?? Including the refs..Rooney isnt even cute! ha!
the next match . . .Man City ! We will see Adebayor against Gunners !
I can`t steel believe that he is gone !
We were the better team & we lost the game ( Arsene said after game )
All the boys were brilliant but Man U players did nothing .
I can say I hate Mike Dean (the referee ) He made many mistakes .
Rukhsana, I LOVE ARSENE WENGER TOO ! he is the best manager on the pitch & off the pitch , Is not he ?! He did the best at 95 minute . (Even though I cried when Mike Dean sent off Arsene !
)
But we will fight until the end & TOGETHER WE STAND !
Manchester did not deserve to win!
Personally. i think that Mike Dean needs to be fired. He has been the referee for a lot of important matches between Arsenal and Man United the last couple of years and he is a known Man United fan! There is no way he’s not biased. The FA really need to sort this as its gone on long enough.
But i agree 100% there was some really great football played, fast paced and exciting. Just how football should be, shame about the ref though.
arsenal played fantastic..they really did deserve to win.I think they showed how determained they are and they kept pushing forward until the last miniut.A spectacular performance by arsenal and a lucky win for united.By the way i hate the ref.
I was very angry at mike dean and will show him my anger one day i meet with him.I feel sorry for our boys, poor diaby. But i am quite proud they played really well today even without cescy.Hope fab will be back soon to show “the men” the real football our wonderboys play!!! Wenger is superb drole!!! WOW our manager is a superstar!!!
Arsenal was sooooo much better then United that it’s crazy and Fergie knows it. You can tell on his face at the end that he knew he was lucky. Wenger is king lol and just think if we would have had Cesc Arsenal would have killed the game off in the first half but atleast they didn’t better beat us. Diaby and Almunia pretty much gave them their stinkin’ goals. Gallas was the man of the match to me. He was amazing and Thomas too.
six yellows. MORE THAN HALF THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS WE HAD ON THE PITCH. what on earth was the referee thinking? i bet he’s a man utd fan and he tried to book arsenal players so that they would be sent off the pitch sooner or later. and that rooney penalty. it may have changed the game, who knows?
Man Utd 2 – Arsenal 1.. a very hard result for me to swallow down.. obviously; Arsenal played a better game than Man Utd.. Man Utd wouldnt have come back in the game if it werent for the penalty & the own-goal..
like what Arsene Wenger said; Arsenal were the better team but they lost due to stupid referee’s decisions (in my opinion).. Arsenal were robbed for a penalty when Fletcher brought down Arshavin on the penalty box.. the ref didnt even give him a card!! can u believe it?? seems like Mike Dein is leaning towards Man Utd side yesterday.. how many Arsenal players were booked in yesterday match as compared to Man Utd players who were more ‘dirtier’ than our boys?? geez.. this is not the right way to empire a match (it’s an important match)!!
whatever it is; hopefully Arsene & the boys will bounce back from the defeat & thrash Man City in their next game.. may this be the only defeat for the Gunners in this season..
an excellent match with a very dissapointing outcome. Arsenal played brilliant and they should have won. I am a devoted Liverpool fan, but for the first time in many many years I now keep an eye on a second team aswell. These guys are fantastic together and I hope they will do well in all competitions this season. Today I was with my sister and her husband and we watched Liverpool play as we always do. We always cheer on them together. after their game we watched Arsenal and we cheered and screamed for them, when they scored the first goal my brother in law went up and kicked a big basket around out of pure happiness, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.
Well, I personally could’nt watch the titans clashing 2day. But after analysing all the comments I think Arsenal played a fantastic football. All same this slight lose will not prevent Arsenal from winning the premiership this season.
what a brilliant game was this!!!unfortunately manchester won with the help of arsenal… and diaby played very well but his own goal…
mike dean vs arsenal 2-1 <—this is what happened
but dont worry , i think this made arsenal much stronger against the manchester city match
GO GUNNERS!!
Arsenal4life
and hope cesc will be okay
I agree with everything you said.
I can’t believe how everything happened. United didn’t do nearly anything to deserve what they got and I wish I could personally kill the referee.
i think the boys were lovely today even when we were down. The scoreline definitely doesn’t reflect what the match was like. I feel so sorry for Diaby, i think he played well in the match, moved well and was really strong when he had the ball. I really feel terrible for him.
This sucks a lot of unsavoury things, but I hope the players themselves know that this shouldn’t affect their confidence. In fact i think we should be f***ing proud for having worked so hard and played so well.
And Arsene. PERFECT. I love him for that.
I agree, Arsenal played very well. Arshavin was great with that goal and Arsene Wenger was/is amazing!!!
Man Utd dont deserve that result- Arsenal played 10 times better than them!!
And that ref- he was the one we had last time against Man U at Old Trafford. We got 5 yellow cards that time. FIVE!!
And how many this time? SIX!!?? SEVEN??!?
the boys were very good.they deserved to win,but luck just not with them tonight.
Rooney……motm…for me Arshavin is.
with spur n celsea winning their game ..we will far down but we have 1 game in hand.
hope things will be better next time.
O and I forgot to add, I did not like the referee at all! He was so fussy. Its the premier league!
I apologise for the essay of a match report, but there was soo much going on.
I am totally heartbroken. I think Arsenal played five times better than Manchester United and deserved to win the match. A mistake by Almunia, although I would say that it was not a penalty as the ball had already gone off and was going out for a goal kick, and a stupid mistake by Diaby. I mean norally own goals are created by great crosses, awkward wind and so on. Diaby had no-one near him, he just had to direct the ball the other way!
Gallas was great today. I felt sorry for Eduardo with all the boos.
And just wanted to say I LOVE ARSENE WENGER. I mean come on, who gets tells a manager to got to the stands or whatever for kicking a water bottle down the touchline. I mean come on! I love when he stood on the platform bit!
I think everyone was worried about Cesc’s absence but I think Arsenal coped really well but still there will always be the what-ifs.
