Confederates Cup Semi Final – Spain 0 USA 2

24 June 2009

Spain faced the USA today in the semi-finals of the Confederates Cup in South Africa. What pretty much most football fans thought would be a straightforward match was well quite straightforward, but not how how everyone expected!

The first breakthrough in the match came when Jozy Altidore brilliantly held off Joan Capdevila before firing in via the right hand of Iker Casillas, who was disappointed not to save it. The first half ended with the scoreline of Spain 0 USA 1 – not what everyone expected but in all honesty totally deserving at that point, certainly seeing as the Americans were brave with their formation and were not just sitting-in like most teams do against the likes of Spain.

Spain had the majority of possession but did not seem to have the same flowing nature that they usually do as passes were going astray and the lack of quality finishing leaving them not only goal-less but also chasing the game.

Spain started the second half looking determined to find an equaliser. However, the second half produces more disappointment and frustration for Spain. Spain found themselves in serious trouble when Sergio Ramos failed to clear the ball, leading to Dempsey (Fulham) to take full advantage to slide into the empty net. Despite the USA being 10 men down after Bradley got sent off, Spain still could not find a route to goal.

Overall, the American defence was fantastic, creating blocks and stopping shots occasion after occasion. Tim Howard also produced a number of good saves from Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas. Spain had the majority of possession, howevver failed to make the most of it. Some of the finishing was very poor and most of the team seemed to be playing in first gear. Full match report here

The USA have undoubtedly produced the greatest Confederates Cup shock by beating Spain 2 goals to nil and booking thier place in the final on Sunday. This defeat means the record sticks at 35 games unbeaten, which Spain share with Brazil and will remain at 15 consecutive wins. A night to forgot for all Spanish fans!

I have added 14 new photos of Cesc during the Spain v USA match and a photo of Cesc carrying Puyol during training and a photo of Cesc in South Africa in the latest photos section I hope that at least these give us something to smile about!!!

nat, don’t worry, I don’t see Cesc in Real Madrid ever. He’s hoping to end in Barcelona eventually, so siging for their main rival it’s not a good idea.

Oh, and about Spain losing yesterday, not a big drama. Not taking anything from USA, but we weren’t at our best, Spain won 15 matches and have been undefeated for 35 matches in a row, they have to lose at some point. I think they’ll learn from this defeat and will make them stronger for the next WC.

    Cheers.

well yes i was very dissapointed yesterday because i thought that 100% they would win this match… but i think cesc played well and when the coach substituted him..yes i didn’t like it too
but they had the chance to score but the american defence was very good, that’s why i’m very dissapointed. and i felt a little bit, that i was watching an arsenal match because there was a period when they couldnt use their chances to score goals.
Rozzza- i think xabi alonso shouldn’t be in first team:)

and i think they didn’t played badly , but i felt that xavi was very disturbed, he made very bad passes thats why i dont understand why he substituted cesc

I hope Cesc will stay at arsenal minimum to fill his contract

  9. Rukhsana says:

Alice – I think now that Spain are out. It would be nice to see South Africa beat Brazil and get through the the final. I think today has shown us that anything can happen.

And I totally agree, the result was fair! USA played well, they didnt try to sit back, they ran at Spain and simply out-ran them!

  10. Rukhsana says:

    Hey guys!!

Yep Im really sorry abou the game too. I think most of the Spanish player were not great! although with out any bias I think Cesc played well, he picked out passes, chased the ball and even tried to score. I hate that he was substituted as well! But thats football!

Maria – do you want to save the picture? All you have to do is click on the image, right click and pick Save Image/Picture As and it should work. If that doesnt, send me an email telling me the pictures that you want and I can send them to you.

I think cesc was fine. The problem was the position of spanish squad. And they weren´t fast enough. USA had their game and I think the result was fair.

Maybe will be South Africa and USA in the final… who knows?

  12. maria says:
