Spain v Azerbaijan – International Friendly.
9 June 2009
The Spainish national team faced Azerbaijan on 9th June, 2009 in a friendly match in Azerbaijan in preparation for the COnfederates Cup, which will take place in South Africa, kicking off on 14th June.
With Azerbaijan’s under 21 side being trashed by England under 21s (Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs managed to bag himself two goals) all were expected this game to be fairly one-way, in favour of the current European champions.
Cesc was in the starting line-up for Spain, wearing the number 10 shirt. The game started fairly slowly, with both teams pushing forward without any real malice. However, as soon as David Villa broke the deadlock after 34 minutes, the goals kept on coming. A round up of goals: A hattrick from David Villa and one goal each from Albert Riera, Dani Guiza and Fernando Torres.
A significant moment in the match was when Cesc was brought down in the 6 yard box, in what seems to be a clear penalty shout. The penalty was awarded but Cesc was still down, looking like he was in a lot of pain, clutching his head. It appears Cesc was caught on the head and was attended to by the Spanish medical staff. The penalty was taken and converted by David Villa. Cesc did not return for the remainer of the first half and was substituted at the beginning of the second.
I have added one picture of Cesc, which also his injury in the latest photos section. Here’s hoping the injury is not too serious and we see Cesc back to playing, when the Confederates Cup begins.

he is so handsome.
I didnt want to scare you guys, announcing that he was injured or anything. I think he should be fine for the next match. Its hopefully just a bad cut.
On a lighter note, I think it was just a strange and horrible way od telling him that we dont like his new hairstyle! LOL
Im glad he was in the starting line-up. Hopefully this will be a regular thing. Spain played well. Although I felt they could have scored more, perhaps if Cesc had been on the field more, to provide some assists in the second half.
