Arsenal 1 – 0 Roma

24 February 2009

robin van persie

Robin van Persie does it again :) The only goal of the game came from a Robin Van Persie penalty in the first half.Arsenal started off very brightly, with Roma becoming more threatening as the second half progressed. There were several other chances for the team to score; however we were not able to capitalize on them. Nevertheless, Arsenal go into the second leg with a strong foothold. Match report here

Cesc on the town According to Mr Paparazzi, Cesc spent Saturday night wining and dining with Carla at the Buddha Bar and then headed over to Maddox before calling it a night around 2.30am there are 9 photos in the photo section, Also, there are two more pictures of Cesc Fabregas from the Cardiff match last week.

Now I know which clubs to stalk when I go up to London. ;)

Nzgooner- yep. The home support really were great. They always tend to be in CL games. I wish they were more like in pl games.

The first thing I noticed about those pics was his coat.I want that coat! And nice shoes!

Carla looks gorgeous in those pics.

  4. liri says:

  8. nzgooner says:

I thought the home support was terrific last night. The singing was really strong!

We should have won that more comfortably than we did but Arsenal seem to like to make life difficult for themselves.

The team is very nervous and anxious. They know they aren’t having a good season and unfortunately it is translating into panicky finishing.

It’s a vicious cycle, you don’t win, you get stressed, you lock up in front of goal, you make it even harder to win, so perhaps the main thing to come out of last night is the feel-good factor which will hopefully infect the team.

At least last night, the players repaid some of the faith Arsene has shown in them. Let’s hope before the season is out that they can repay him in full.

Cesc looks a little stunned by the papparazzi probably not used to that kind of attention.

  9. jas says:

thanks for the pix! I am sooo in luv with Cesc’s coat <3 I have major coat envy happening!! He looks really good XD

  12. jordy says:

I’d say we might have turned the corner… only it’s only about 8 days since the last time I *thought* we’d turned the corner so…er… I’ll just call it a step in the right direction

We played as well for the first hour as I’ve seen us play all season, for my money, and hats off to Diaby, he played a blinder which is impressive because hes been out a few weeks

If we could play like that more often and bring that intensity to the first hour of all our league matches I would back us to make the top four… trouble is we are just so inconsistent

  13. crazygal_miLa says:

yup rose!! what u says is true!! :)

if we can get an away goal in Rome; then we’re through to the next round.. :D

by then; Cesc, Rosicky, Theo & Eduardo will be back!! woo-hoo!! :P

  14. sam says:

liri have you been talking to Yulia Arshavin :D

  15. liri says:

  16. snap says:

we won!!! And soon we have cesc, theo, eduardo, ade and rosicky back.

Thanks for the pics, Carla is very pretty girl and very lucky lol

  17. luci says:

ty for pix! I not like Cescys hair sooo short but he has nice clothes taste XD

  18. Rose says:

Hi miLa :D you know with the comedy duo Gallas and Toure providing the slapstick, the Roma guy providing the strip-tease and Robin going for the flash I think the crowd are lucky they weren’t charged extra lolol

All we need to do now is go to Rome and score a goal so I’m very happy because we have done enough to give ourselves a very good chance of going through to the quarters :D

  19. kim li says:

Ah Bendtner he is killing me with his shooting ayaaah! But is good to win at least not another 0-0 draw!!

  20. crazygal_miLa says:

glad that our boys won the first leg of the champions league match.. :)

yes; we’re the only team that won for the first round.. woo-hoo!! :D

my entire family thought that our boys could scored more than a goal.. maybe bendtner is putting alot of pressure on himself; that’s why he couldnt net a goal in yesterday match.. but he has improved as compared to last season; dont u guys think?? :)

eboue was good as well in yesterday match.. just that he missed that golden chance to put Arsenal ahead with 2-goals advantage.. the midfield was better than average cuz denilson & diaby seems to be a good partnership.. :)

but overall; our boys did pretty good.. :D

second half was funny cuz i didnt noticed the match underwent with 2 players short for Arsenal squad until the commentators said it.. and the clip of toure & gallas running to the pitch was funny.. :)

didnt know that u can get booked for entering the field without the referee’s permission.. wahahaha.. pity toure.. :)

the Roma guy who was adjusting his shorts was disgusting!! i was kinda taken aback when the camera-man zoomed to him.. my mum & dad laughed at his actions.. RVP is also a victim of showing his underwear during the start of the second half.. he’s a joke!! hahaha.. :D

  21. siew lan says:

good gunners won!! we can win champions league for sure!! XD

  22. DC Wash says:

Good confidence boost. Considering our injury list it’s a very good and deserved win!

I agree with you Tuty, Bendtner may be best as an impact sub. However, we are not spoilt for choice at the moment…

  23. NY-Gunner says:

i was a bit frustrated by how wasteful we were

we really should have put the tie beyond roma’s reach as we created good chances and roma were sh*t

the result is ok but we coulda and shoulda done better

  24. Rose says:

Hi jinza :D I’ve added what I’ve found.

I noticed that too Tuty :D Robin! He’s such a tease lol just kidding. Thanks for the article :D

  25. jinza says:

Carla went with Cesc to buddha bar do you have big pic of them??

  26. Tuty says:

I’m so happy we won! And yeay, we were the only ones to win too. But we could have scored more… am I alone in thinking that Bendtner is only a good sub but not a good starter at all? Even Wenger rues the missed chances… let’s hope we can invade Rome in a fortnight!

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/7906404.stm

Lol Plu & Bri, I saw that too. And if I saw correctly, RvP entered the second half also trying to adjust his shorts (and underwear?) very openly.

  27. Rose says:

Here’s what Arsene had to say and an explanation for why Gallas and Toure were late back at half-time

    On Roma’s positive gameplan…
“The game was more positive than what we saw on Saturday and both teams tried to play and go forward. I believe our pace gave them problems in the first half and in the second half we had one chance after the other. At that moment there was room to score. When we tired in the last 20 minutes you saw that they could be dangerous as well.

    On Nicklas Bendtner’s performance…
“Maybe he lacked a bit of spontaneous attitude because we want to play so well and do so much. I still believe that defensively we had a sound performance and we didn’t concede a goal as well.”

On the contrast with Saturday’s match…
“I believe that the games are locked in the Premier League because the teams refuse to play. When teams don’t come out, the game doesn’t go up and down. We had no space on Saturday and as long as you don’t score the first goal, that is what you get. In a game like tonight both teams take initiative when they win the ball back which isn’t the case at the moment in the Premier League.”

On the performance of match-winner Robin van Persie…
“I wanted him to play because we’ve had problems scoring goals. I wanted to play him closer to the goal and put Samir Nasri central to give him a more creative role in our build-up. I believe it worked quite well and we always looked like we could be dangerous going forward. Overall I am very pleased with Robin’s attitude and performances since the start of the season.”

On starting the second half with only nine men…
“Kolo always goes out for the second half last so he waited for William who was having treatment at half time. They didn’t know the game had started without them and they were putting their boots on. It was our fault because you have to be ready when the bell rings. I played at a time when we didn’t even go in the dressing room at half time!”

    On Francesco Totti’s contribution…
“I felt we kept him quiet by protecting the centre well. Also we were dominating the game so he didn’t get much service.”

On Denilson’s role in the midfield…
“I still believe that Denilson has had a good season. Since January he has become more dominant in the defensive area of the game. He is 20-years-old and he hasn’t missed a game since the first game of the season. It’s a fantastic performance.”

  28. bri says:

lol I know Plu that commentator was so funny lol like none of that please we’re British!!

  29. sam says:

Diaby and Denilson seemed a much more effective midfield partnership than Denilson Song but I don’t want to reach any rash conclusions after one game. Eboue did well, Nasri and Robin had excellent games too. It was a good team performance. Bendtner will catch some flak, understandably, but his off the ball movement was good and he did create space for others.

    Advantage Arsenal!

We were the only team that won tonight.

  30. matt says:

I deffo woulda taken 1-0 before kick-off so I’m happy enough with the scoreline but considering the chances that went begging I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed… and I’m just praying that our finishing doesn’t come back and bite on us on the arse in the 2nd leg

  31. jas says:

Woohooo!! We do know how to play, ok we still don’t always know how to finish BUT we do know how to play haha happy for my boys!! Now they have to start scoring from open playing and then scoring for fun and then they’ll be like me old Arsenal again XD

Well done lad keep it going XD

  32. max says:

Cracking game of footie that! I would have liked to see us all but finish it tonite so was a bit disappointed we didn’t seize our chances but we kept a clean sheet, we were up for it from the get go and hopefully it’s a confidence boost heading into the weekend. We’ve gotta get back to winning ways!

  33. Plu says:

I agree George. I was so happy that they did not get that away goal. That gives us such a big advantage in the next match. :) The boys did really well today. :)

Bri-yep Eboue was indeed impressive. Don’t know how he missed that goal though.Lol. He does seem to have been getting better over the last month or two.Diaby looked like he got a knock, but hopefully he is ok. I thought he did very well today.

Denilson impressed me the most. He was amazing today!
I was really worried about the midfield before the game, but they did actually boss the game. :)

I found it quite funny when Arsenal started the second half with 9 men and then toure and gallas come running onto the pitch, without their shirts on. Looool. Kolo was asked about that in the post match interview, and he said that he is always the last one on the pitch in every match, and that he was waiting for his teammate [gallas]. And that he got a yellow card for running on, and that he didn’t realise you could get a yelow for that. Then he concluded by saying that he had learnt another rule today. :)

And another funny moment was when my commentator started having a fit because one of the Roma players started changing, and was at one point wearing a shirt and his underwear. The commentator kept going ‘Oh come on now. There is no need for that.’ Lol.

  34. fonz says:

Great performance from the lads!! They really dominated. Denilson,
Diaby, Clichy, RVP, Al were all excellent the team delivered. The shot in the arm everyone needed

  35. george says:

good result,,, no away goal is half the battle,,, I hope our misses don’t come back to haunt us,,, but a win is a win and I’ll take it

Bri you’ll be happy with your boy,,, and I have to say the whole team played head and shoulders above where they were on Sat

  36. bri says:

I knew Robin would score! He was brilliant for us as was Nasri, Diaby and Denilson… and Eboue did well too (apart from that 1 chance) So happy as I was a bit nervous but the boys stepped it up :D

    Hope Diaby is ok?

  37. TA says:

Good stuff! 1-0 to the Arsenal! We played a lot better and we kept a clean sheet which is the important thing. We should have had a couple more really but hopefully we’ve done enough… especially with Eddy back for the 2nd leg!
