Cesc back in training!

23 February 2009

Arsene Wenger and Cesc Fabregas

(Source) Good news! Cesc Fabregas trained with the Arsenal first team squad for the first time today, Feb 23.

Cesc is itching to play and Arsene Wenger told reporters, “He says he could play tomorrow, but I have to tell him it’s not possible. But the doctor tells him first,” he added that his captain still would not figure in the Champions League return leg away at Roma on 11 March.

“But after the second leg he will not be far [from fitness] if it all goes well,” Wenger said. “It will be two or three weeks I think until he is back in normal training. He can play now but a medial ligament takes six to eight weeks and if there you have any contact like we did against Sunderland [on Saturday] you need solid knees.”

Fabregas said in his recent captain’s notes that he was aiming to return against Manchester City on 4 April, but Wenger may try to get him ready for the match against Newcastle United on 21 March. We will have to wait and see but it will be great to have Cesc back whenever he returns!

Good luck to the team against Roma tonight!! Go Gunners!

Cesc Fabregas photo special

Cesc Fabregas at the Bernabeu

Three years ago this week, Cesc Fabregas returned to Spain with Arsenal to play Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was his first appearance as a first team professional footballer in his homeland and as Arsenal ran out winners 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League tie, Cesc was lauded in the spanish press for his outstanding performance.

No english side had beaten Real Madrid at home before, but Arsenal made history when Cesc Fabregas fed Henry in the centre circle and he held off Ronaldo, skipped past Alvaro Mejia and Guti before racing into the area, muscling past Sergio Ramos and planting an angled shot past Casillas into the far corner of the net, scoring the only goal of the match in the 47th minute! What a great goal it was. Photos from the pre-game press conference, first leg and second leg matches are in the photos section. You can read more about this great moment here.

Cesc Fabregas: Club de Futbol

Another blast from the past! A year ago, in February 2008, an interview Cesc Fabregas aired on Club futbol. The video and transcript in english are below

Captaincy

I have always said, I like to have responsibility. The more responsibility the better I like it and hopefully this will always be the case because this means that I will always give my all, the maximum.

Arsene Wenger

Aside from being a coach who has taught me a lot off the pitch, you know you can go to his office, you can rely on him no matter what he’s going to help, because he puts you first as a player. I am fortunate to have this type of coach, he gives you confidence and helps you feel sure and calm on the pitch.

Renewal for life

I am just 20 years of age … Raul and Guti are no longer 20 … I do not know if they would have signed it [for life] at 20 years.

Henry’s Departure

Henry, for the last 6 or 7 years has been the soul of Arsenal, the pillar, the idol of the fans… we could take it [his departure] two ways we could say we have lost it all, we are not going to be Champions or we could move forward, look forwards…

Henry’s arrival at FC Barcelona

In the beginning he needs to adapt as everyone knows. Now you see it that he is playing again and it takes three or four games to adapt.

Ronaldinho

It would be very difficult to be a lifetime at the level he was at in the first three years, because he was incredible. Ronaldinho restored the Barça to where it was 5 years ago and what he did has to be respected because it was amazing; he revived things once again, he gave a tremendous amount to the club.

Real Madrid

We spoke with each other, it was clear what I told him and what he told me. It is a great club and everyone knows where the best players have played in history. It is very difficult to say no to a club, a club like Barca, Milan, Madrid, which for me are the 3 largest.

I’m good at Arsenal, I am happy and I know what I want because I tell you, sometimes people think I am older than I am but I am only 20 years old. I know I have a lot to learn.

Return to La Liga?

Almost everyone knows it and even I suppose my coach knows it, so everyone knows.

Wishes

In 2008 … that Arsenal win the Champions League and Spain win the Euro and health for all.

  22. junie says:

I’m really looking forward to this game!! So long as we keep a clean sheet job half done!!

time for the REAL ARSENAL to stand up! Go Gunners!!

I can’t say I’m feeling confident but I’m hoping the lads can do the business. Come on you mighty GUNNERS!!

  26. max says:

Good to know that Cesc is inching closer to playing.

Now let’s hope we have a good game against AS Roma tonight as that would be the best possible way to get over Saturday’s disappointing result.

    C’mon Gunners!!

  27. Rose says:

    lol @ mj :D

I think Cesc will be happy to be training with the first team squad again, so that should cheer him up some hopefully. Arsene and the doctors know best and I don’t think we’ll be seeing any impromptu pitch invasions from the captain lol :D

  28. jas says:

WoW!! Training with the first team! YaY!! Go Capi Fabby!! I can so like hear Cesc begging Arsene to play him lol the waiting will be killing him but Arsene is right to be careful XD

  29. kim li says:

I wish Cesc could play now but I know is wise to give more time! Not too much more waiting now soon be good to see our captain

  30. mj says:

I’m with you Bri… you can only spend so much time worrying about things that might not happen.

Why do I have an image in my head of Arsenal going a goal behind against Roma and suddenly a small dark-haired figure bursts out of the stands past the security guys in the orange coats, strips to his kit and under-armour points Eboue to the bench – tells Denilson to move to the wing – and begins to play!!

OK my imagination is a little over-active but it must be so hard for poor Cescito to sit in the stands. I’m sure he’d give his entire collection of Desperate Housewives box-sets just to be able to play.

  31. bri says:

I simply refuse to think about anyone leaving until they do.

I simply refuse to think about finishing outside of the top four until we do (and hopefully we don’t lol)

There is no point dealing with the future before it arrives… let’s just deal with the present and beat dem Romans!

The last time we bought a defensive player… we bought Tweety from Manchester United… I think Fergie really needs to shut it.

  32. TA says:

Hey Plu:D Arsene said this about Cesc having faith in the team

    http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/my-golden-generation-says-wenger-1630359.html

“They feel we have a big potential,” he said of Cese Fabregas and Robin van Persie in particular, “but they are like everybody and they want to win today and now. I share that as well. A big battle is impatience in general. Who is patient? Is your wife patient? Mine is not. As long as we have not won the trophies people question your ability – we have to keep the belief and keep going and the trophies will come naturally. What we achieve in the rest of the season and trophies we win is important in keeping players like Cesc and Van Persie, but they have to decide whether they really want to show how good they can be together. That is in their hands as well.”

I wish the papers would just print his full comments, its like you get one quote in The Times and then a bit more in The Independent you have to go to 6 sites just trying to figure out everything he said!

That is great news about Cesc, I bet he is impatient to play but Wenger is right to be cautious.

  33. NY-Gunner says:

it’s really hard to know how much faith robin and cesc have in the squad

i read a comment on here from someone saying about how deep robin was dropping during the last game to collect the ball i wouldn’t like to hazard a guess as to what all of our players think

they might think 1 or 2 things aren’t working but overall have belief in the team or they might think 3 or 4 things are wrong and that the club wont spend enough to fix it this summer

i think we have more chance of cesc staying than robin if we don’t make the top four because cesc is 21 but robin is what 25? he might not be willing to wait another couple years to win something with Arsenal if fcb come knocking

any way brilliant to hear cesc is back on the ball

  34. Rose says:

Georgie hes not saying we won’t win anything who knows we we may win something this season, the fat lady hasn’t even cleared her throat!

I know what you mean though reading those quotes, it does make you wonder if Arsene himself isn’t admitting that it’s going to take another 2/3 years for some of his players to be the players he hoped they’d be now – but still they are going to be constantly improving.

It’s great news about Cesc being back in proper training so let’s focus on the positive

  35. george says:

the thing that worries me,,, may be it’s not a factor,,, but Arsene seems to forget his own situation,,, I know he has the boards 100% backing,,, but still if the club wins nothing before these boys are 23/24,,, it may be Arsene who is not here

  36. Plu says:

I agree Rose. I remember Cesc once saying in an interview, (in fact I think it was one of the ones posted on this site) that he doesn’t owe anything to anyone in life, apart from three people: his parents and Arsene Wenger. And its pretty blatant that Cesc wants to pay Arsene back for his faith in him.But I also believe right now that Cesc has some faith in the squad. I mean this is only one bad season. The next one may be better. And in the past few years we have got to the finals of cups and near winning the pl. And as long as we have reinforcements for next year then I’m sure he thinks we will do well.

Yep. That is true.It will just be painful seeing him leave. But ah well. At least he will get to play at both his two favourite clubs on the first team :) And he will be reunited with his bb Alex. Barca is the only other club I could see him going to. So real madrid president candiates should really stop saying in each election that they will bring cesc to real madrid. Not happening!

I think results may play a factor in his future departure. I mean if we don’t win any trophies in the next few years, then he’ll probably be thinking I want to win trophies and it doesn’t look like I am going to get them here so I need to move on.Which is fair enough.
I know when he leaves it will be on good terms and that arsenal fans will have a good image of him, like they have with Thierry. :D And then I guess I will start watching some Barca games occasionally.:)

  37. Rose says:

What we achieve for the rest of the season and the trophies we win at the club is important in keeping players like Fabregas and Van Persie,’ conceded Wenger.

‘I don’t want the players to stay for me, I want them to stay because they feel they are at the right club.’

I feel this part of what Wenger is saying is very specifically about Cesc. Because I believe that Cesc is a very loyal kind of person. He doesn’t just jump off the sinking ship, or change horses, imho He’s always said he’d like to play in la liga one day, I think everybody needs to know, I get what you said about denial lol Plu, but I also think it’s important that Arsenal fans know he has been consistently honest about that being a long term ambition. I think we are going to hear a lot that Cesc will leave because of our season but I think that’s wrong. I think if and when he leaves it will be for many reasons and because it’s time not just because of results. I don’t know I’m rambling lol

    Plu – You’re right it’s x_morrissey’s she makes nice icons! :D

  38. george says:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1153547/Wenger-needs-silverware-golden-boys-Arsenal.html

there were similar quotes in the Daily mail,,, but they had a bit more from Arsene

‘What we achieve for the rest of the season and the trophies we win at the club is important in keeping players like Fabregas and Van Persie,’ conceded Wenger.

‘I don’t want the players to stay for me, I want them to stay because they feel they are at the right club. We have to keep this team together. We played with Walcott at the start of the season, with Diaby, Fabregas, Nasri and Denilson as well. The oldest is 22.

‘When they are 23 or 24 they will comfortably beat the other teams, believe me, but we have to keep them together, no matter what happens. That is the danger of the modern game.’

Also he said this in response to old purple nose,,,

I’m not interested in Ferguson’s comments and I never read what he says,’ added Wenger as he prepared for tonight’s first leg of their last 16 clash at the Emirates.

‘Recently we have been accused of having a strong defence and no attack.

‘There is a lot of pressure on me. United had a golden generation with Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, the Nevilles, Butt and they won together because they stayed together. This team can have similar success. We have big potential, but they’re like everyone and they want to win today.”

I agree with you Matt,,, Ferguson has no class.

  39. Plu says:

oops. I read that all wrong. I thought they were saying that Cesc got past all then Thierry. Impressive.

The only one likely to leave in the future is Cesc me thinks…possibly Nasri and Walcott….doubt the other midfielders would go anywhere. Forgot Arshavin. Him as well. Now lets hope we do manage to keep them. We do not have a great record we keeping players. First step is getting rvp and theo to sign their contracts. Feeling a bit jittery about rvp….flamini also stalled his contract last year….

Thanks rose :) Yep is a shame, but ah well. We can at least still see them, and they are much better than the previous icons! And thansk to the person who made it. Morrisey was it?

  40. Rose says:

Plu you set up your icon – it looks nice! Pity we can’t have them bigger. BTW Cesc didn’t score the goal against Real Madrid – Thierry did :D But Cesc had a great game!

  41. TA says:

Just saw this from Wenger in The Times

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/arsenal/article5792807.ece

“I believe this team is as good as anything in England,” Wenger said. “We have to keep this team together. We played at start of season with Walcott, Diaby, Fàbregas, Nasri and Denilson and the oldest one is 21 years old. When they will all be 23 or 24, they will beat comfortably all the other teams, believe me.

“Manchester United had a golden generation with Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, the Nevilles and Butt. They won together because they stayed together. This team can have a similar success, I believe. If you can beat Manchester United at 20 and 21, why can you not beat them at 23 and 24?”

Trouble is he is asking for another 2-3 yrs patience when the club has not won anything since may 05

  42. Plu says:

I came across a quote from Mirko Vucinic(roma player) on LJ:
“Since we’re still trying to reach the fourth place and that at first things were not going how they should have, we will have more will than them.’

loooooooooooool. He has clearly not been looking at the premier league table.

  43. ~meri says:

thank you for always sharing such lovely pics with everybody ;o)

  44. Plu says:

No english side had beaten Real Madrid at home before, but Arsenal made history Real Madrid and Ac Milan.:)

    Thanks sam!
I didn’t get into football until the start of the 2006/7 season., although I watched the CL final. I haven’t seen Cesc’s goal for the real madrid match, but it sounds like it was a heck of a good one :)

    Return to La Liga?

Almost everyone knows it and even I suppose my coach knows it, so everyone knows. *sighs* I know he will eventually leave but I love being in denial.

Erm….has SAF not realised that a lot of our attacking players are injured…hence signing more. Our defence is much better than our attacking force at the moment, so I’m not worried about that imbalace.

Diiaby fit. Good. He can inject some pace. I think Eboue will probably start too, with denilson and Nasri. Hope that midfield can dictate the game enough….

  45. Matt says:

Arsene has always focused on acquiring attacking players and it has always worked out fine until this season. Ferguson is sticking the boot in because Arsenal are having a bad season… maybe our worst in a very long time… which shows a real lack of class. They aren’t playing us, there’s no reason for this. The man can’t even be a gracious winner, he’s scum.

Truth is Arsene’s problem this season is that his attacking players have not produced, he doesn’t have the talent he once had at his disposal. Hopefully Arshavin is going to help with that.

  46. jilli says:

awww he looks so young and sweet in those pics! and thanx for the vid 2 =)

  47. fonz says:

Don’t take any notice of Ferguson, TA, he’s just jealous because Denilson, Song and Eboue don’t play for him.

I read Diaby is fit for tomorrow, so he may start in the middle for us.

  48. Rose says:

TA I have to say in all honesty I don’t give a big rats bottom what SAF has to say about anything and as we have been conceding few goals and scoring little an argument could be made that Arshavin was the right signing for our present situation.

Let me just say go Inter!! lol

  49. TA says:

    Saw this in the independent

Ferguson said of Wenger: “He believes profoundly in his youngsters. He doesn’t like to blend them too much with older players. What astonishes me is that he always buys attacking players, like [Andrei] Arshavin. He is a good player but he already has [Samir] Nasri, [Emmanuel] Adebayor, [Robin] Van Persie, [Nicklas] Bendtner, Eduardo [da Silva], [Theo] Walcott. I don’t think he likes buying defenders. That lacks balance.”

    What do you guys think?

  50. sam says:

you are most welcome bri and jas :D

Yep george them were the days!

  51. jas says:

awww! thanks for those piccies luving the ones of Cescy and Phil XD

  52. george says:

I remember that match back in 2006 at the Bernabeau,,, those were happier days,,, we went all the way to the final in Paris that year,,, here’s hoping we can do that again,,, and win it this time!

  53. bri says:

    thanks Sambo!
