Arshavin joins Arsenal
2 February 2009Say zdravstvuite (hello in russian) to Andrey Arshavin, our newest gunner! It’s official, after one of the most protracted transfer sagas in Arsenal’s history, a deal has finally been reached between Arsenal and Zenit St Petersburg for the transfer of Andrey Arshavin. His first interview on Sky Sports is above and his first ATVO interview is below the cut, thanks to Plu for the heads up! All the details are on arsenal.com. Also Arsene Wenger gave his reasons for wanting to sign Arshavin earlier in the week.
A little more about Andrey
For a little more background on Andrey Arshavin there is a good bio piece in The Sun and more details at wikipedia Also here are a few photos of Andrey and his family. Andrey is married to Julia and has two adorable children, a 3 yr old son, Artyom and a 9 mth old baby daughter, Yana, who are pictured below. We’ve also included some holiday pics, a photo of Andrey carrying the Olympic torch in 2008 during the russian part of the relay, and a couple of pics from the two times that we know of, where Cesc has played against Andrey.
Arshavin has an official site where he personally answers fan questions. He seems to have a good sense of humour and to be a real family man.
A little more about our new number 23
If you haven’t already checked them out there are a lot of excellent compilations of Arshavin playing for Russia and Zenit available on Youtube. Here is one to give you a preview of what we will hopefully be seeing him do in an Arsenal shirt soon! Below this is a video of Andrey’s first ATVO interview

Gosh, I forgot to share this link (which I;m sure you all have read already!): http://www.goal.com/en/news/1712/arsenal/2009/02/03/1092065/arsenals-andrei-arshavin-happy-to-be-a-gunner
“But now I am a Gunner,” he added, with obvious pride, before issuing a stirring rally cry to the Arsenal faithful.
“Trust in me, and trust in Arsenal,” he concluded.
In Arsene we trust. And now in Arshavin we trust too!!! It seemed like the whole transfer saga was a miracle come true!
Oh God, I’m so sorry to join this discussion so late but was so glued to all the online news on Arshavin’s move to Arsenal, made possible by Arsene! Yes, Sam, I had that exact thought too: Arsene has signed Arshavin for Arsenal!
Am sooo happy he’s finally joined us at longgg last!!! I heard him on BBC Sport this morning, his English is quite good. He’s not tall (heck, I’m shorter!). And he’s cute too!!!
Hi Kate
He says “soon”…as in he will start scoring goals for Arsenal soon!
Arshavin, Cesc, Denilson Rosicky that’s a sick midfield!! Eduardo back soon too. Soon we be mighty gunners again!!
im really glad we got him because my day shouldn’t start by going to arsenal.com to see if we signed him or not.
it really looks that he’s really happy joining arsenal and looks determined to do his best, hopefully he can adapt in the league quickly and help turn our season around. i loved how his message to the fans were to trust in him and trust in arsenal. But my fav qoute was “Andrei have you spoke to Pavlyuchenko since you’ve been in London?”…”No he is not my friend”! hahahaha a week before the derby and he knows where his allegiance lies. hopefully we beat the scum!!
congratulation everybody…..finally we have Arshavin.happy for him n for Gunners as well.
he sound so adorable cant wait till see his game.hope it will be as good.
also hoping for the spirit of the player n the fan will be up,after all it is THE TRANSFER OF THE YEAR SAGA not interm of price involved but because of the length of suspense it held.
So cheers everybody n gud lick for the next game.
happy news!! the wink la hes a hottie XD
sorry guys but what was the last word he said in the second interview ? i didnt hear it so well :/
so glad we finally signed him
Can’t remember the last time I was this excited by a signing. It’s so “un-arsenal’ to get a genuine marquee player in. I think hes going to be sensational
Thanks for the videos! Good on him for doing the interviews in english. He’s got the right attitude is keen to adapt and I think now that he has finally got here after maybe not knowing if he would make it, I think he will be so hungry to succeed. I really like the guy, everything about him has impressed me so far.
so happy for him <3 He looks so good in Arsenal shirt
)
I know he is channelling serious adorableness you are right. I was just thinking we will have the most adorable cutest to the max, midfield in football (not to mention most talented) no one will get near us now!!
Don’t worry you’re not spamming!
hey goonerbb
I think he can get a work visa quite quickly, though I don’t know, but I wouldn’t think Arsene would play him just yet, I think he’ll train with the team and have a settling in period and then he’ll probably come on as a sub – so this weekend is probably a bit soon.
Thanks for posting that TA – interesting to hear more about what happened.
Arshavin late yesterday afternoon was near despair and sat down on the floor with his head in his hands saying “this is not going to happen. they won’t let me go. they won’t let me go†aww. Poor bb.
Arshavin was so excited about the move and happy to be an Arsenal player that he was wore an Arsenal shirt the whole evening.XD. <333333333 Seriously, my love for Arshavin is exploding. Could he get any more adorable. Adorableness (erm…that’s a word in my dictionary XD) overload. I can’t deal with so much in one day.lol
all paperwork was faxed before 5 and he called it “a miracle†I’m glad that that is cleared up, as people keep on going on about how aston villa could potentially get the FA to investigate Arsenal for the ‘illegal’ transfer if Arsenal pip 4th spot at the end of the season- just like what happened to West Ham last year when they managed to survive relegation.
A miracle- then a lot of those reports about it being on and off must have been true.Well, at least they know NEVER (!!!!) to do any business with Zenit again.
I’m still buzzing from hearing about the confirmation XD. I should really stop spamming this board.lol
Thanks TA really interesting
Will he play in the Derby then do you think he gets work visa in time?
I saw this interview with one of the agents that worked on behalf of Arsenal to get the deal done and it was quite interesting he said -
- Arsenal ended up paying more than they had hoped but he didn’t reveal the figure, but probably around 15 million.
- Zenit were almost impossible to deal with and didn’t seem to want to sell no matter what until the very last moment
- Arshavin late yesterday afternoon was near despair and sat down on the floor with his head in his hands saying “this is not going to happen. they won’t let me go. they won’t let me go”
- all paperwork was faxed before 5 and he called it “a miracle”
- Arsenal went “above and beyond” to make it happen and were “extremely positive” in their negotiations
- he went out with Arshavin for a drink last night and Arshavin was so excited about the move and happy to be an Arsenal player that he was wore an Arsenal shirt the whole evening.
Makes me even happier, if that’s possible…that this is done because Arshavin deserves his chance to live his dream.
YES!!!
They should rename arsenal.com to arshavin.com they’ve gone arshavin crazy over there!!
I heard he took a pay cut to sign. Awesome dude!!
awesome!!!! About time!! I almost died during this signing
So exciting! Great signing. It’s not often we sign a player that Barcelona and Chelsea have tried to get so I guess I’m glad in a way that Zenit are so hard to deal with and please lets never do business with them again!!
I Think Arshavin will be a big success
I read in one of the papers that when he left last night he kept the shirt on and wore it back to the hotel gah!!He is killing me here. Bless him. He is so adorable!!!It looks like he is wearing the Arsenal shirt under his coat in that interview as well.
Thanks Plu lol but I really didn’t do anything much – you did more work than me
with the regular SSN updates
I meant to say my waiting here is done lol I refreshed Arsenal.com so many times today and there must have been so many gooners doing that – it’s a wonder we didn’t crash their server lolol
Aww that’s adorable about the shirt also I read in one of the papers that when he left last night he kept the shirt on and wore it back to the hotel
that interview is so cute! The wink haha and I love his accent!! Can’t wait till hes ready to play XD
And thanks for all your work Rose
One of the agents behind the transfer deal(on Arsenal’s end) was on SSN and he said that Andrey coudln’t wait to put the shirt on when he signed (it was the first thing he wanted to do)and that he was really excited that he had finally joined and was acting like a fan. Bless him!
hooray!!,,, it’s off for a beer
and to those of you,,,who kept your heads,,, when some of us (ahem) might have been panicking about stories in the russian media,,, thank you for helping me through the most bloody trying transfer in the history of the universe,,, it is appreciated boy and girls
Get IN!!! Finally!! It’s officially party time people!!
Cool I fixed the spelling
My work here is done! I can finally stop re-checking google and wearing out my f5 key lolol
Bri- I loved that wink. Made me laugh so much. He has blatantly practised/used that many times.
And Arshavin confirmed that his name is spelt Andrey, so Arsenal spelt it right.
Thanks Plu
Wow his english is really very good he will be very fluent in no time. The wink is a nice touch lolol When he said this “I am so happy to be joining Arsenal, it’s was my dream. I like Arsenal’s style, I like Arsene Wenger as a coach and I like some players in this team.” I thougth I bet one of the players he likes is Cesc
yay!! Andrei is a gooner!! Thanks for the interview Plu!! So cute and that little wink at the end is a killer, He knows how to work it
Thanks Plu! I thought he gave a good interview. It can’t be easy. We’ve had players that didn’t speak english as well as that when they arrived. I think he will adapt quickly.
Arsene did say we hadn’t applied for a work permit it was story #5632 that turned out to be wrong lol there were a lot of those in this saga but all is well that ends well!
looooooooooooooooool @ that wink at the end XD.
‘Trust in me and trust in Arsenal.’ Aww. Bless him!
That interview must have been taken last night, because it was light here when they announced he was a gooner on the Arsenal site.
He doesn’t have a working permit yet…i thought they got that last week…ah well.
His first ever interview
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I8Iy2fwz1Hg
Thanks Plu! That’s good. If he has some english it’s a good start he’ll pick more up once he gets here and the team will help him
So it’s finally a done deal. Excellent. Arsenal.com is wall to wall Arshavin! It’s a great lift to have someone like this joining the team
His english, from that interview seemed ok. He struggled a little but you could understand what he was trying to say. He can obviously improve a lot, but he was fairly able to string a sentence together.
Yes lol he is very short only just over 5 ft 7 I think. Cesc is a lot taller than him
I didn’ realise he was so short! His hair is really well conditioned. Nicest hair on our squad most probably.
He said he is not match fit yet, and said Arsene will decide if he plays against Spurs. So he seems to have realistic expectations. I don’t expect him to start on Sunday. Maybe a sub role? But that could be pushing it if he isn’t match fit.
aww! That sounds cute
Plu how was his english? I’ve only seen one interview with him and he was talking in russian with sub titles
good news . thanks for the pics rose . he looks cute . cant believe he has 2 kids .
good day after the mad saga
Wooooo! Hell Yeah!! GET IN!!!!!!!!
Awwwww! He is so cute. I just saw an interview of him on ssn and when they asked him about how many goals he will score or something like that, an arsenal fan shouted out 30 goals. He scrunched up his eyes and went soon. So cute!!!
And he said he has been a gooner for a while. So he must have been confirmed a few hours ago.
lol I see Arsenal are spelling his name Andrey? It’s Andrei every where else I wonder which is right?
Not that I really care too much right now.
The ATVO interview will be on youtube later for people who don’t have ATVO
I’m so happy this whole thing is done!! YAY!!
The shirt really suits him
Welcome to the Arsenal family
For all those people who have ATVO , his first ever interview with Arsenal is up on the site
Yeah bb!! he looks so cute with his shirt!!!! XDDD So happy ha ha time for a voddy!
great picture! I think I look even happier than he does though! Arsene has signed Arshavin for Arsenal!! Say that five times when you’re drunk
At last! Great stuff
phew what a relief I really started to worry
GET IN THERE!!!!Wooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Finally. What a joy it is to see him holding that shirt. He is finally ours!!!!!I’m so excited right now
The Official Announcement says:
Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Russian international midfielder, Andrey Arshavin has joined the Gunners from Zenit St. Petersburg on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.
Arshavin, 27, who played a key part in Zenit’s UEFA Cup winning campaign last season, was also a member of the Russian EURO 2008 squad in which he scored two goals from his three appearances, earning him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.
Arshavin won the Russian Premier League with Zenit in 2007, making a total of 232 appearances for his previous club, scoring 51 goals. During his time with Zenit, he was also part of the winning team that picked up the Russian Super Cup in 2008, the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003 and featured in the UEFA Super Cup victory over Manchester United in Monaco last August.
With 41 international caps for Russia, Arshavin has scored a total of 15 goals for his country. His versatility has allowed him to play in a variety of positions; the 2006 Russian Footballer of the Year started his career as a right midfielder, but has since played as an attacking midfielder and more recently has filled the ‘second striker’s’ role.
IT’S ON ARSENAL.COM!!!!!
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/russian-international-arshavin-joins-arsenal
Sky sports news have said the deal has been completed. Right, so now we are waiting for Arsenal to update. That could take a while…..
skysports are saying it’s complete,,, that it’s confirmed
Sam whatever the PL is considering they’re certainly not just rubber stamping it. Every other transfer from the window has been confirmed now except for this one.
I hope leaving it so late isn’t going to bite us on the …
We’ll have to wait and see.
Hang tight we should hear something soon as the FA will close for the day so hopefully we will get an answer before they do. Fingers crossed.
I can’t believe this is still not official. it’s almost 24 hours since the window damn well closed grrrrr!
Well Arsene told skysport there would be a positive announcement on things around 7pm yesterday so that is very late for Zenit to have sent things but there are 2 things that might save the deal.
1. If we sent all our paper work and said Zenits would be coming then it shows there was an agreement
2. The PL said they would allow extensions if it could be shown that the player OR ANY staff involved in doing the deal were affected by the snow…
so hopefully we can make some case to allow this to go through as the alternative is just unthinkable I mean f**k this would just be tragic for Arshavin and obviously hugely disappointing for Arsenal.
Andrei Arshavin’s transfer papers was sent to the FA on Monday at 11:53 pm Moscow time ( 8:53 pm GMT)
“We were extremely efficient”, said an RFS (Russian Football Union) official Sergei Kulikov. “At 11:52 pm we received a call from Zenit to let us know that the clubs came to agreement and the player signed a personal contract. Sixty seconds later, Arshavin’s transfer documents were in London “.
…..that’s not good…..
I’m hoping that is a rumour, otherwise there is no way the FA will approve that.
One last piece of drama hopefully before this whole thing is finally done and dusted.
I would have thought if we told them the paper work was on the way too it shows the deal was done?
There has been so much disinformation, we’ve heard one thing only to find out the complete opposite was true so many times, that at this stage I don’t know what to believe. So all we can do is wait for arsenal.com
Yeah. I have been hearing reports of the Russian FA faxing the details well past the 5pm deadline. But surely if they have faxed some over then that will mean that there was an agreement in place….
But then again, we don’t know anything. This could be just pure speculation.
I have to say I don’t believe Bevington would be talking to some random russian media source but I do find it very believable that some of the paper work for the deal was late because there was so much confusion around this whole deal at deadline time. Especially on the Zenit side.
Thanks Plu
I read that we got our paper-work in by 4.30pm in more than one newspaper too but the Daily Mail has been saying since early this morning that some of the Zenit paperwork was late.
Now the Evening Standard (but they are same publisher as the Daily Mail) say The deal will only be ratified this afternoon if a panel decide the move was “substantively†completed prior to the original 5pm deadline.
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/article-23633424-details/Arsenal+forced+to+wait+for+Arshavin+approval/article.do
They are saying we told the PL the paper work was coming but their was some delay with the physical delivery of some of the Zenit papers and they missed the 5PM deadline.
It may still go through though, even under the scenario that the Evening Standard is outlining – if that is in fact correct, who knows.
The amount of time that confirmation is taking is making it more believable that there is some glitch, but hopefully IF there is, it’s not enough to derail things.
Yes. He has signed for Chelsea, and been confirmed (yesterday), but on loan, not a permanent transfer.
And Chelsea may have faxed in the details for Quaresma to the FA earlier, the media just may not have been aware of it until later. All I know for sure, is that here they are reporting that Arsenal faxed in the details at 4.30pm.
If there was any truth to these quotes supposedly from Bevington I’m sure mainstream UK media would have it George. I mean if he would talk to someone in Russia, I’m sure Skysport would ring him and get some quotes. Also I think the FA would advise a decision but it doesn’t sound believable that they would come out and say something was 50-50
The club will be waiting for word so they can make an official announcement just like everyone else is.
I think we’ve just got to sit tight, obviously it would be nicer if this process was faster but it takes as long as it takes.
Plu just one thing, Chelsea’s arrangement for Quaresma was very last minute has it been confirmed do you know?
I’m not believing any media reports. If the FA have a problem then they will say directly on their website. Why the heck would they go talking to a russian website anyway?
Jas, I really wouldn’t worry. The snow brought the city to a standstill yesterday, and it is still having a bit of an impact today. Yesterday, at the premier league/fa (wherever the confirmation takes place), a lot of the staff were not able to make it to work, and had to work from home. Today, whislt a lot more have gone to work, no doubt some will not have been able to get there. And those who did get to work today may have got to work late due to the fact that the buses and trains still had some delays.
And it does take a while to confirm a transfer. The documents are over 40 pages or so, and they have to go through that carefully. And we didn’t hand in the papers until 4.30, whilst other clubs did it sooner and so they got confirmed sooner.
Stoke are also waiting for confirmation.
I would only start worrying if nothing has been announced by 7 or 8.
This is in the russian media
Andrei Arshavin’s move to Arsenal may not go ahead due to the deal being completed after the closure of Monday’s transfer window, the English FA’s director of communications said on Tuesday.
Adrian Bevington told Russia’s sports.ru website that the issue was being discussed and that it could take up to three days for a decision to be reached. He also said that the odds of the 27-year-old Zenit St. Petersburg forward becoming an Arsenal player were “50-50.”
Arsenal need to come out and say something/anything,,, as it is getting late in the day for their to be nothing on arsenal.com when we have supposedly signed this guy,,, It’s time for the club to talk to it’s fans,,, even if it’s bad news,,, it would be better to get the state of play direct from the club
It is taking a little longer than I expected. I thought we would hear word from the PL this morning but as Plu said the PL have indicated they have quite a few transfers to deal with and it will be a few hours. So we wait
why is it taking so long to confirm. I’m really starting to worry now I couldn’t bear it if anything went wrong with this now
I wish the people who ratify things would get a wriggle on!!
What’s another couple of hours after 33 days lol
nice of the FA to leave us till last, they’ve probably gone off for their usual 2 hour lunch sigh
SSN have said that it will still take a few more hours for the confirmation as they still have to confirm other transfers…..
Hi Plu I think he played on the wing for Russia but who knows what Arsene has planned, he has his own way of doing things lol Arshavin might be played in the middle while Cesc is out seeing as we lack any effective creative play-maker and Diaby is out for at least a month. Though Nasri might come in as he has looked better centrally and Arshavin might play on the wing. I don’t know how many minutes he will see and how soon because he won’t be match fit at the mo
Well Zenit have announced it as official on their site but still nowt on arsenal.com
It’s kinda fitting that there should be one last bit of suspense in this whole soap opera heh
XD I’m waiting for the premier league to give the go ahead and for arsenal.com to put up pics.
But I refuse to believe there will be any more hurdles- this tranfer has been one heck of a rollercoaster ride for all Arsenal and probably Zenit fans, and lets not forget Andrei. I don’t know how he managed to get through all that. But congrats to him for taking the initiative to travel here, and for paying that 2.5 mill (if he did).
I hope he does really well for this club. The transfer will at least bring some more confidence for the fans. We have all been asking for a signing, and we have got one- a big one at that. I know he will not be our instant saviour, but boy will he make a difference on our wings….he does play on the wings usually right? The radio stations over here keep on saying he is a striker…..
12 million…that can’t be right…that would be a bargain if we got him at that rate. 15 million looks nearer the mark.
Aww. His baby is so cute. I was really surprised last summer, when I found out he was 27. He looks nowhere near that age.And his wife is pretty, and looks a little shy. Bless her.
And I have another day off school
This day is just perfect.
good news . but i am still waiting for the confirmation . i have to say that the guy looks handsome and cute . i knew that he has a 3 years old boy but never heard of the daughter . the guy seems nice . glad we got it .
about the saga , it was really tough . even a russian journalist wrote about that in a russian newspaper , he said it could have been easier for zenit to solve the gas problem in ukrain and russia . i thought that was funny
Hope to see a pic of him holding up a shirt and grinning for the cameras soon!
As to whether he will be worth it, impossible to know, but one thing is for sure we have to sign him to find out lol
I mean the club made one of it’s most important signing in the summer of 2003 and there was no headlines and no one paid any attention to us getting a 16 year old called Fabregas… but it was a pretty huge moment. Like wise clubs make signings and their are lots of headlines (Keane to liverpool?) and then the players don’t live up to the hype. You can never be sure how it is going to turn out ahead of time because every player is different and some travel better than others but I think Arshavin is more than worth a shot and I’m backing him to be a big success!
I just checked arse com and it’s still not there … any idea when this will be official.
Thanks for the cute pics. the pics of him and his kids are just XD
Maybe he is another Michael Jordan fan!
I wonder where Arsene will play him, from what I’ve read he can play either wing, attacking mid, in the hole behind the striker or even as an out and out striker. He’s very versatile and very good on the ball he will fit Arsenal well. He’s not going to be much of an aerial threat lol but you can’t have everything.
I think Cesc’s game this season was just as effected by the loss of Hleb as it was by Flamini going so… I’m looking forward to seeing Cesc play with Arshavin. I refuse to even think there will be any problems confirming this. The power of positive thought!
Hi snap
According to the note he posted on his official site last night he plans on wearing the number 23. I guess we’ll find out for sure later today!
such a difficult transfer!! now i hope that he will become a gunners legend and help us win!!! Also I hear he wearing #13 yes?
haha I think we get no one! I can not believe if it is true really to see Arshavin and Fabregas together is a dream for me!!
tq Rose for the nice pic.He does look good.
Cant wait to see him play with Cesc n hope with his presence the Gunners will soar high enough to be in top 3/4.
Well i would like to say Wellcome for Arshavin n hoping he is real….
GOOD LUCK GUNNERS.
I know I’ve joked about what an idiot Arshavin’s agent is but I have to say I’ve found something I 100% agree with him on lol. Lachter said: “It [the deal] was completed in extra-time but we must wait for confirmation.
In 16 years this has been the most difficult transfer ever.”
Has it %&^%$$# ever!!
I think it is probably worth it. Agree with DC Wash…Arshavin is his own man. Nothing about him makes me think he is likely to have anything in common with Reyes. For starters he’s going to think a cold day in the north-east is ‘sun-bathing’ weather. He may not be tall but he’s built like a proverbial brick out-house. Hes a real solid stocky guy, very physically strong, he won’t get pushed off the ball, low center of gravity, very good balance, strong core, quick, two good feet and the x factor that you can’t train into a player… the killer instinct. Don’t want to get ahead of myself but the minute this is confirmed then I’m officially thrilled.
WoW. He doesnt look old enough to have kiddies! I hope he will be a big success and play great for Arsenal
It’s hard to imagine how this whole thing could have been more stressful! It will be good to have it confirmed. I have developed a far greater mistrust of the media after the last few days.
I think Arshavin will be a real asset. Arsene knows what he is doing and I don’t doubt he has the skills.
To the person who mentioned Reyes, don’t forget Reyes was quite successful on the pitch but wanted to leave because he didn’t like the situation personally. Andrei Arshavin is an individual, unique and like no other, it is impossible to know what the future will hold but your comparison to Reyes is baseless and there is no need to be pessimistic. Support the man and give him a chance.
I’m seeing reports of the deal being 12M and 15M,,, I don’t know which is rite.
I think confirmation is just a formality and a red tape thing all the media,,, including the papers you can actually trust,,, are saying it’s a done deal
i’m real psyched! this is awesome news. i hope there aren’t any last minute hitches.
i think this little dude is quite a special talent and i think he and fab will really complement each other. fab was missing having someone intelligent to work with in midfield who could create some space for him and also play those quick 1-2′s and i’m really excited to see how they play together.
it’s going to take arshavin a couple months to adapt and people shouldn’t expect too much too soon but from what i’ve seen arshavin really can pick a pass and he can unlock defences and get by players in the final third. he’ll really help us. hes also quite a handy goal scorer himself.
looking at the market and who was available, he is probably the best buy we could have made. i would have liked to see us sign 3 players but after this damn saga i’m just relieved to see us sign someone!
hes not necessarily going to be able to “save us” only jesus saves, but it’s a good move.
I really, really hope he’s worth it b/c usually big signings don’t work out for us. Remember Reyes?! Though maybe Arshavin will adjust better because the weather shouldn’t be too different then Russia and he’s older. I wonder if how it will turn out when he plays with Cesc?
awww soooo cute
) I hope everything is settled in the morning
