cesc and lionel Just a reminder that voting for the UEFA Team of the year closes on January 12. Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Adebayor were nominated. So, if you haven’t already, make sure you vote here.

UEFA asked Lionel Messi, Kun Aguero and Marcos Senna to name their team of 2008 and they didn’t agree on all positions but they all picked Cesc!

Lionel Messi named his 2008 Best XI as: Petr Cech (Chelsea), Maicon (Inter), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Javier Zanetti (Inter), Xavi (Barcelona), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United). 1. NY-Gunner says:

It’s great to see that 4 out of the 5 players that have named their UEFA teams have picked Fab he is very well respected amongst his peers

I would like us to get Arshavin but it’s a long way from a done deal, so it’s gravy if it happens but I won’t sweat it if it doesn’t.

  2. Matt says:

fonz mate I’d really try not to get your hopes up to high. Arsene said this today.

“It’s not incorrect to speak about the transfer, but even if you are interested in a player and he’s not signed or hasn’t come here, it’s like putting people in front of a big table and saying dinner is not for you,” he said at Friday’s pre-match press conference. “If I say now how great a player is and do not bring him here, people will think that is stupid.

“There are a lot of managers who talk openly about players they would like. [The press] contribute highly to that. I am under pressure to talk about players that maybe I am not capable of buying.”

You don’t want end up really hungry standing in front of that table only to realise that dinner is not for you mate!

  3. TA says:

George did you see Arsene said “However at the moment, we are not looking to buy on the defensive side of our game”

Well that’s pretty much what I was hoping for over and done then. Maybe in the Summer…

  4. fonz says:

I’m trying not to get my hopes up ……………………………………………………………….. damn too late I already got them up lol

  5. jas says:

I hope we get Andy Arse-saving but of course ya just never know how da cookie will crumble :D

  6. plu says:

Sheesh. Barca are always after our players…well….wenger did take two of them away on a free transfer…but that was only two!…even if one of them is now one of the best midfielders around…..

I don’t care if it’s arshavin we get, or another player, as long as it is a player….preferably a good one XD

  7. Rose says:

    Thanks George :D

“I can not confirm or deny anything” lol well that’s pretty much what I expected him to say to be honest. Time will tell.

Yes I voted for Senna I think he is a tremendous player. I wish we could sign him :D

  8. george says:

Actually the quote above was from his Thursday interview with ATVO,,, this is what he said in today’s press conference:

Arsène Wenger has remained tight-lipped amid rumours he is closing in on Andrei Arshavin.

The English newspapers have been linking the Russian playmaker with a move to Arsenal throughout this week. But at his press conference on Friday, Wenger let nothing slip.

“The situation from Arsenal’s perspective is to keep everything quiet and secret and not to talk too much,” he said.

“I think tactically the selling club is always more interested to get things public than the buying club. I cannot confirm or deny anything.”

Speculation has been pouring through the transfer window even before it opened on New Year’s Day. However, despite a couple of big-money moves, Wenger believes most of the rumours have been hot air.

“It’s like every January,” he said. “In December everybody becomes absolutely agitated and thinks on January 1 players will move from everywhere.

“At the moment we are seeing what we see every year, a very quiet transfer market.

“There is not a lot of money. If you look at the financial situation of the English clubs you will understand very quickly why most of them are quiet.”

well we are definitely in for him,,, but of course the fat lady has not sung,,, so just more waiting and seeing. Hope it doesn’t drag on and on before we find out either way but let’s face it these things often do,,,

  9. sam says:

Thanks George. That’s good news about Kolo.

I just added Marcos Senna’s UEFA team of 2008 and he voted for himself you gotta love that. It’s honest! He said he had too… so that he could be sure of getting 1 vote as it was tough being up against Xavi but he need not worry because I was sitting next to Rose when she voted and she voted for Senna. I confess I voted for Xavi :)

  10. george says:

Here’s Arsene’s quotes from today’s press conference,,, nothing too conclusive but no denial either,,, so Arshavin is a target but only time will tell if anything comes of it.

“We do not want to talk too much about who we want to buy,” Wenger told Arsenal TV online.

“At the moment I cannot give you any good news but in this job no news is good news. Nothing has fallen through. We are on alert in the transfer market.”

He also hinted that he was also in the market for a defensive midfielder to bolster his injury-hit squad.

“That is also a priority,” he said.

“We are not in the big league. We are a little short because we wanted a player like (Tomas) Rosicky to play 80% of games and he has not played at all.

“We want to spend money but as everyone knows, and as the the chairman has said, we have money available but we have limited resources, and you want to spend it in the best way possible.”

The Frenchman also quashed rumours that Kolo Touré, who recently retracted a transfer request, could leave the Emirates and was adamant that nobody will leave the club this month.

“That (Touré story) is finished. We will not sell any players this month.”

  11. Rose says:

Hi Matt :D I don’t know if Cesc will do one I read Senna and Pepe would be but there was no mention of Cesc. So I don’t know

  12. jin says:

I voted for Cesc + as well Messi + Kun cuz they voted for Cesc ^^

  13. kim li says:

    congrats 2 Cesc

  14. matt says:

wonder if they’ll get Cesc to name his team of 2008 I’d like to know who would get his vote.

I went with Cech, Sagna, Puyol, Carvalho, Capdevila, Ronaldo, Xavi, Cesc, Iniesta, Adebayor, Messi and Aragones for coach. As too me winning with a national team is different to winning with a club a coach of a national team can not simply go and buy the best like a Ferguson he must work with the players from his country and it was brave to drop Raul. I don’t like Aragones but I respect him.

  15. ~meri says:

Ruby Arsenal said they would turn down a 100 million bid for Cesc so 50 million is no going to buy Cesc and Robin lol as mj say these rumour is just make up

Is daily star you ever see stars in the day? these paper is no serious :o )

  16. mj says:

    Thanks Kate :D

I saw that TA :( All these injuries really are going to make the battle for 4th tougher but hopefully some of our youngsters will grab their chance

  17. kate says:

welcome back rose and mj .
we missed you so much .
first i would like to thank you for the pictures . they are amazing . cesc was so cute when he was young . but in some photos he had that terrible hair cut . long brown hair.hope he doesnt think about it anymore .

i was so glad to see him at the plymouth game . what a fan .
the boys had the perfect start for the new year . they played so well and van persie scored 2 good goals .he did great as a captain . to be honest i never thought that he could make it as a captain but he proved me wrong and did it . i feel that the center midfielder suits nasri more than a winger .

i am glad that both messi and aguero chose cesc in their list . the only thing the press was surprised about that messi didnt choose c.ronaldo in his list .

so happy that cesc is positive and getting better .

    GO ARSENAL
    GO FABREGAS .

  18. TA says:

Uh. Now Gallas is injured and out 3 weeks as is Silvestre so we are really starting to look well short in defence… a bit of a worry

  19. bri says:

and to think Cesc is the youngest on the list….and will get better and better!!

  20. emma says:

Happy for Cesc,at such tender age he is among world best….

hope he will be better in years to come n be the world no 1.

  21. max says:

When I voted I put Messi in my team but I didn’t put Aguero :D I doubt Aguero would be picked ahead of Messi by many :) I made Cesc captain too

  22. mj says:

Don’t worry Ruby Cesc can’t go to Barcelona with Robin…because he’s going to Real Madrid with Arsene :D Seriously, it’s just more silly tabloid fiction :D

  23. george says:

Messi picked Aguero but Aguero didn’t include Messi,,, I think Messi is one of the best players in the world,,, I can’t see how any player could leave him out in favour of Del Piero or Ibrahimovic

  24. ruby says:

OMGZ!!! i just read that barcelona are preparing a £45m deal in June for cescy & robin :(

    I hope it’s not true!!
