Cesc injury update

cesc fabregas Arsenal.com reports this morning that Cesc Fabregas was struggling with his knee after Saturday’s win over Wigan and will not travel to Porto. Nasri, Toure, Clichy, Adebayor, Sagna and van Persie also did not travel. Arsene Wenger said, “Sagna has flu. He just came out of bed to play against Wigan. Clichy has a hamstring problem and he has a little chance to play on Saturday. Toure has a calf problem. It’s not serious but enough not to play. Fabregas is out and is also a doubt for Saturday against Middlesbrough. It’s his knee. Nasri is out with an ankle injury. He is definitely out for Saturday and maybe two or three weeks. Van Persie has slight stiffness in his leg but will be OK for Saturday. Adebayor is rested and Bendtner will play.” Let’s hope all the players are on the mend and fit again soon! Good luck to the gunners for the match

Radio Fabregas (updated) – Cesc did some spanish radio interviews yesterday. He was on Radio Marca’s Intermedio show and on Cadena Ser’s El Laguero programme. You can listen to the latter show in spanish here. Thanks to Soarne for helping me with parts of this translation!

Cesc told Radio Marca when asked about the future, “I am very happy here and I have stayed to win trophies with Arsenal. I am not closing any doors on anyone but at the moment I have a really important responsiblity that the club has given me – the person [Arsene Wenger] who did so is very important to me and he believes in me. It’s not everyday that at 21 you become captain of Arsenal. For that reason I am very happy and proud.

“Being a captain in England is very different to being one in Spain. Here they put an incredible value on it. They give you huge responsibility but my team-mates, the club and the supporters are treating me very well.”

Cesc also praised his former club FC Barcelona saying, “In the whole of Europe there is no club playing as well as Barça.”

cesc fabregasHe told El Laguero, when asked the following :-

Question: In spite of the interest of Madrid and Barcelona does captaincy reaffirm your desire to stay several years in England?

Cesc: “The idea has always been the same, that’s why I signed a very long contract but in football today nobody has a gauranteed place, everything is very complicated, and you never know, but the truth is that right now, I am very happy and very motivated and to be captain is an extra incentive.”

The interviewers then mentioned the recent media reports, that Arsene Wenger is worried because of the Webster ruling and wants Cesc to sign a new deal now. However, Cesc replied, that Arsene hadn’t said anything about that directly to him and he is not aware of the Webster ruling.

They then asked him about whether he would like to play in La Liga and he said, “Everyone knows that some day I would like to return to Spanish football. It is an experience that I would want to live in the future, in one of the big Leagues, as a professional. He emphasised this was his plan for the future, not now.

He also spoke about it being a big responsibility to be captain at 21 and said that he would like to gain experience and learn as much as possible from it.

Finally, they talked about the Balon D’or which was won by Cristiano Ronaldo, Cesc said, “Cristiano’s season was spectacular, but I would have liked to have seen what Messi did recognised, because he is my friend.”

Vote for Cesc, Ade and Sagna! – Cesc Fabregas, Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Adebayor have been nominated for UEFA’s team of 2008, you can go here to vote for them!

Denilson praises ‘fantastic’ Cesc – Denilson has spoken with the press ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League match away to FC Porto and praised his midfield partner and backed their partnership to suceed, “Cesc and I play well together, he is a fantastic player. I have always believed we could do it because we have the quality.

“Sometimes I have to be more defensive, I am learning to stay more in position now and not to go up front too much. I still have a strong belief in the team because now we have more focus, on the Premier League, on the Champions League, on everything. In my head, it is now thinking no more lose or draw – just about win, win, win.

“Arsenal have a young team, but it is one with experience and quality. When you watch our football, it fantastic, all one or two touch, and I believe in this team.” More on tomorrow’s Champions League match between Arsenal and FC Porto here.

  • Hi Matt :) Glad you like the site

I don’t know why Cesc appears to contradict himself… maybe he is indecisive lol. Perhaps he just hasn’t made his mind up. I mean if you think about it do you know where you want to be next year? in 5 years? in 10 years? Is it even a sensible question to ask? It’s possible that he is trying to tell everyone what they want to hear… and that never works out in the end.

I admit he probably needs to come up with one answer that he gives no matter what language though and the club probably needs to stop putting out statements that clearly don’t reflect what Cesc really thinks.

  • Thanks! This is an awesome website. I have a question this is not a criticism but I’d be interested in what you think

At the end of Sept Cesc said he would never talk about moving from Arsenal and if things went well there was no reason why he wouldn’t stay for life.

But days later he said it would be a dream come true to return to Barcelona one day

Then we got this statement last week that he is 100% committed and his future is with Arsenal

Now we get all these comments about wanting to play in Spain one day.

Why does Cesc contradict himself so often? Does he really think that if he says it in spanish no gooners will ever know?

  • Hi Matt and Jess :D

We heard that Cesc had been on El Laguero (which was where the ‘wanting to play in Spain’ quote and also the ‘long contract’ quote came from) about 5 minutes after the show aired and Cadena Ser put the audio file up literally 10 minutes after the show.

I listened to it (and posted the link above) I have some understanding of spanish but I am not fluent and I only posted the quotes that matched what I had heard and that were also in the media. Then Rose got in touch with a friend in Argentina and e-mailed them the link to listen as they are fluent in both english and spanish. Then to double check I spoke with Soarne at ontd:football she is a native spanish speaker living in Spain who has excellent english, and she listened to it too. ONLY then did we post the quotes. None of us heard Cesc say he was staying until 2014 that was not our interpretation.

Both Soarne and Diego said Cesc was very vague, dodged all the questions, but he definitely committed himself to Arsenal for the present. We all agreed with each other on the words of the answers… which made there way into the UK press… so we wanted to cover those parts of the interview accurately. We wanted fans to know the question he was asked and also the order of the interview because this was either absent or misrepresented in the papers where they made it seem as if he talked about his contract and playing in Spain together, he didn’t.

We did not post any editorial, any commentary or interpretation from anyone, we have simply tried to provide an accurate account triple checked no less lol We think fans should judge the words for themselves and reach their own conclusions.

FWIW I don’t think he said anything that anyone should make a fuss out of.

    December 11, 2008

  • thanks for the radio translation, I don’t like how he says there is no gaurantees… you never know…

The papers say he said he would stay until 2014? Did he say that? I don’t really get that reading what he said… ?

  • so long as Cesc gives us 110% each time he sticks on the shirt that’s all we can ask. He goes when he goes. No point worrying about it. I’ve heard players like Henry, Reyes, Flamini etc make all sorts of promises and the club issue all kinds of statements but in reality you just never know anything for sure in football.

    December 10, 2008

  • Hi MiLa :D Sorry if you felt bombarded lol I just thought you were asking a lot :) sorry but I understand why many fans would of course love Cesc to retire at Arsenal, it’s just I think we have to respect the fact that playing for FC Barcelona was his dream when he was a child, and I hope that he will realise that dream. Just not yet lol

I don’t think him saying he would like to play in Spain some time in the future is worth even worrying about. He has said that before, it’s not even news. I don’t think the fact that he is captain makes a difference. Captains leave clubs too, he is just talking about his long-term plans and the fact he will return to play in Spain isn’t something he has ever made a secret of, so why should he hide it now :D

Now on to more important and concerning topics. Please, please let him be able to play against Boro !!

  • as a captain it not good saying these things, sorry, i don’t get his point telling the club and fans with his statements that his future is with arsenal, but then in one weeks time he contradicts himself again in spanish interviews about his future. imo honestly i think he wants to go to spain but does not want to betray wenger. hope the lads win today.

  • Diane, I don’t know if you have been coming to this site for very long but we are actually quite careful about what we post. So we are not posting lies.

He did do live radio interviews. We posted a link to the audio from Cadena Ser. He did say these things. As I’ve already said, I don’t think he said anything that bad. He said that he wasn’t closing any doors but he said a lot of positive things about being happy at Arsenal as well, and he said he would like to play in Spain in the future. Nothing new there… and he did praise FC Barcelona and make the comment about Messi. It’s true. If the media twists what Cesc has said we have, on several occasions, been quick to point out the truth and to show how what he has said has been twisted but that isn’t the case here

Cesc didn’t necessarily go over to Spain, it sounded like a phone-link. I’m sorry if you prefer to think it is all made up, but honestly I’m a big fan and if it were, there is no way I would post it :(

  • oh dear. well I must say, I don’t know what the point was in issuing a statement through the club just a few days ago, if he turns around and says these things just days later.

It’s funny if he had said these things when he was a player it wouldn’t have bothered me at all I mean hes just being honest, but now that hes captain, it does feel like a slightly different situation somehow…

I just saw that Eboue is starting at rightback I do hope he has a good game! Go Eboue!!! I think the team can get the draw and stay top, go gunners :)

    December 10, 2008

  • Sigh. I had hoped with all the Champions League coverage that Cesc’s radio interviews might fly under the radar. The Telegraph picked up on the Radio Marca interview and ran the “doors” quote. Then Sport.es ran a story based on the interview to say he said he dreams of playing in Spain. He didn’t say dreams but he did say he would like to and now the Daily Mail have picked up on that. Pity. They are running the mis-leading headline Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas has his heart set on a return to Barcelona

I know everyone knows he will go back to Spain one day and I know he’s just being honest but I think maybe now that he is the club’s captain, he should try and stay away from talking about leaving so much. Even if it’s in the distant future. It is still better for the captain not to talk about leaving the club.

  • I read this and then decided to think a while before making a comment. It is easy to over-react to the quote but I think he has said it with the intention of stating his committment. The problem is that once he mentions other clubs and brings up the topic of ‘leaving’ no matter how indirectly… gooners will want to hear him make some very clear cut statement of intention. He doesn’t. That feeds the speculation that already surrounds him.

It’s less than a week since we were told through Arsenal that “Cesc is 100% committed and his future is with Arsenal.” My question to be honest, is why couldn’t he say that, out loud on spanish radio? My future is with Arsenal I am 100% committed to the club. I really think Cesc and/or the club need to stop with all the statements every half an hour

The injured list is getting to be very long I hope they’re only niggles.

Why can’t he just say point blank that he is committed to Arsenal, no one knows the future, but he is committed to Arsenal and has no intention of leaving. It’s always one messages from the official Arsenal site (and that could be the club PR machine) and another message when he talks in spanish to people in Spain and I feel like I’m getting played and I don’t like it.

I guess he’s just being honest he doesn’t see himself staying at Arsenal beyond the short to medium term… it’s not really news but as you said Rosie it’s not great timing.

    bri

    December 9, 2008

  • Sheesh. He keeps getting asked the same questions everywhere. Must get boring to have to answer the same thing again and again. Wasn’t wise to say that ‘no closing doors’ part. No doubt the Spanish press will latch onto that and make it seem like something it isn’t.

Hope Cesc’s knee gets better.I’m glad in a way, because it means that at least he can get some rest. I wonder who is going to be captain for the match……they didn’t name a vice-captain did they?…i assume it will still be toure….

    plu

    TA

    December 9, 2008

  • Cesc would make a great politician…he avoids a straight answer for almost all those questions in that interview…lol…very impressive, he’s learning very quickly….our Captain…. Cesc(knee),Nasri(ankle),Sagna,Clichy,Ade and RvP have been left behind in London to be rested btw (according to official site)….Hopefully Cesc will be fit for the weekend – I’m a little worried that our starting XI at Porto won’t be enough for a victory , but, maybe I’m being pessimistic :P

    Robbie96

    December 9, 2008

  • Thanks for fixing it up Rosie. Yeah the ‘I am not closing any doors on any one’ part doesn’t really sound great but maybe he means that he doesn’t know what the future will hold so he can’t rule anything out but right now he is committed to Arsenal as he has been given the armband and hes proud and happy!

Still it makes it sound like his committment is “right now” or “at the moment” and as captain it would be much better if he could stay away from saying things that give that impression and instead give the impression of intending to be around for some time.

It was probably just an innocent slip up but it certainly doesn’t help cool the never-ending speculation.

I hope his knee injury is minor.

    mj

    December 9, 2008

  • maybe asking him to spend his entire football career in Arsenal is a lil’ bit too much; but other footballers have done dat too.. maybe i’m selfish to have Cesc all to Arsenal FC.. :)

well; if he wanna leave Arsenal FC, let it be when Arsene Wenger is no longer da coach.. hehehe.. :D

    crazygal_miLa

    December 9, 2008

  • First of all MiLa hon :D there are a lot of Arsenal legends who didn’t spend every day of their entire career at Arsenal, Titi is a legend and he obviously left.

I think you are being a bit unreasonable expecting that Cesc should be with us from 16 to 35, I mean come on now.

I’m ok with Cesc leaving Arsenal in the future if the time is right for him or for the club, that is football. He certainly won’t choose to leave because he is offered a better deal as he has already been offered big money and he is still here :D However, in the future Arsene may retire and who knows who the new manager will be and he may want to go back to his homeland, and I don’t think you could begrudge him the right to go back home to his family and friends. He is a life long supporter born and bred of FC Barcelona. Everyone has always known that.

But I do think that he will be at Arsenal for at least another few years and as he has just taken the armband the timing of this comment is pretty unfortunate so I am checking to see if he has been misunderstood.

    December 9, 2008

  • mj hon :D You left out the part where he said, he’s not closing any doors on anyone, so I’ve added that in and just made a couple of tiny changes to the translations.

That quote would have been so nice if he had just said “I am very happy here and I have stayed to win trophies with Arsenal. I have a really important responsiblity that the club has given me – the person who did so is very important to me and he believes in me.” That would have been such a great thing for our new captain to say. It’s a shame he had to mention not closing the door on anyone and by that he obviously means other clubs. Not a great thing to have said on the surface of it. I am going to get my friend who is fluent in spanish to listen to the audio to see if I’m missing something.

mj :D Cesc is pretty good with the media but still doing spanish press is like swimming naked with piranhas especially given the determined nature of sport.es and the like… they will find some way of interpreting what he has said badly. They will claim he hinted or implied something. He can say he is happy, he can come out and make statements about his future being at Arsenal but they will claim it is vague lol and that he wants to leave. It’s just the way it works so I wouldn’t rule out a story or two coming out of this.

I bet he will be pleased when his “new captain media duties” are complete it must get a bit tiring when you are doing interview 23 lol and he has to be so careful, one wrong word one way and the UK press will hammer him and one wrong word the other way and the spanish media will hammer him and he doesn’t want to alienate either set of fans because obviously he plays for both Spain and Arsenal. It must be like walking a tight-rope :D
