Cesc Fabregas on Football Focus

Arsene Wenger indicated to the press yesterday that the club would be looking to sign Cesc to a new contract next Summer. When a player under the age of 28 has served three years of his current contract he can now buy out the remainder of the value of his deal and leave under Article 17 known as the ‘Webster ruling.’
Although Cesc signed the longest contract in premiership history in October 2006, which runs eight years though to 2014, he will have served three years of the contact in October 2009. He would then, theoretically, be able to invoke the Webster ruling and leave in the following January 2010 transfer window.
Arsene Wenger said when discussing the ruling and it’s impact on contract renewals at Arsenal, “We will extend their [Walcott and van Persie] contracts. Cesc we will do so at the end of the season. January 2010 is a long time away. It may come quickly but it’s still a long time.

funny eh…your story …more or less like mine.i also find this web as a place very useful since I have difficulty in sharing stories about cesc n arsenal with my friends n family…..because moast of them are fan of other teams.sometimes we do fight just becoz of football game in England….haha.just like u Kate I will be very unhappy if Arsenal lost a game n anything happen to cesc..
and I wii be veru happy if arsenal win ….but I dont have any friend to share,…so that is why I come here……

you see, not everyone wants to hear that, you don’t have to be optimistic, a lot of the people who comment aren’t always optimistic.. me included lol.. just try to be a little less negative.

yes i am too negative most of the time .i admitt it but please – just please – dont question my lOve and loyalty to arsenal .i am crazy about them and about cesc too . i spend most of my time on the web checking arsenal news . i am a true arsenal fan although i was born in manchester city and our house was three blocks awayy from the old trAfford . could you believe it ?
the problem is i am too emotional when it comes to arsenal and cesc . i get affected by any news i read or hear . sorry but i cant help it .when arsenal is playing a game , i dont speak to anyone even my family , i keep quiet , too quiet . when they win it is like a festival in my house . when they lose i feel terrible . i go to school with such a gloomy face . no jokes no laughes no fun nothing . my friends call me silly vevn my mother but i dont care . winning is all what it matters .
when we played against manutd i wasnt at home . when i came home my mother told me we lost but when i knew we won i was jumbing screaming and crying and i didnt talk to my mother for two days . when WE won against chelsea our house was like on fire . i wasnt reall that optimistic before the game – as usual – because OUR last trip to the stamford bridge wasnt that good .
guys i am so sorry to be that negative .i really didnt mean to bring you down or anything but i was just having a chit-chat with you . no one of my friends or my family is a sport fan so this is the only place where i can talk to someone about my beloved arsenal .
mj . i wonder most of the time what is gonna happen if fabregas leaves so once i read a rumour – even if it wasnt true – that he might leave i am so down so forgive me . i try to expect the worse of everything so when it happens then i am ready and if the good stuff happen then i am grateful but it seems i am going too far with this .

Don’t you get tired of always thinking the sky is falling when it’s not! If you want to believe every tabloid story you read no one can help you. I’ve already replied to you in the past but you never take any notice of anyone who tries to explain anything to you, you would rather listen to every rumor going. Have fun with that.
There has been less cause for everyone at the club to be smiling so far this season but Cesc still celebrates goals as before. My question for you Kate, though you never have the courtesy to reply to anyone is… why are you so determined to try and insinuate something bad or create a problem when none exists? I have a hard time believing you are genuinely a fan.

It seems to me that the Webster is not quite as dangerous as the Bosman where a player can go on a free. Under the Webster “the remaining value of the contract can be bought out” so the club would receive the remaining value of the contract, but that wouldn’t be anywhere near what they would receive in the transfer market.
I think all the Webster ruling does is put a much greater burden on clubs to remain on top of their contracts, and also negates the power and usefulness of long term contracts. You can not tie a player to a club for more than 3 years and to stay ahead of the rules you are looking at contract renewals every 2 years.
Obviously the Webster also increases player power it’s another bargaining chip. However in the commercial world people doing mission critical roles can leave with zero notice, so clubs should be able to make this workable within reason even if they do not like it.
Arsene has always believed in letting players who want to leave Arsenal go. Look at how well Cristiano is doing at Man Utd this season – you can’t hold a gun to players heads and so to that extent there’s no meaningful change. If Cesc wanted to leave I don’t believe Arsene would stop him, ruling or no ruling, so it doesn’t make a difference to that imo
Anyway, I am hundred per cent certain that Cesc will be fair and professional in all his dealings with Arsenal – in five years of good loyal service to Arsenal he has never done anything to give us cause to think otherwise
I don’t listen to the tabloids and I don’t monitor Cesc’s smile-ometer but I do listen to Cesc and I do judge him by his actions and I think he is a decent guy.

No there has been no news on the knee! And we are thinking no news is good news in this case because Arsene did give an update and list the walking wounded but Cesc was not on the list so hopefully that means he is making the trip to Porto. Rosie posted an injury update under the Arsenal 1 – 0 Wigan entry because that was where we had Arsene’s quote about Cesc’s knee.

guys i dont know what you think but i noticed that he doesnt smile that much really this season . he rarely smiles in the interviews and in the games even we are winning . he looks upset and bothered most of the time .
webster rule bothers me all the time . i dont think cesc will be committed to arsenal for ever if we dont get any silverware this season . couple of days ago he said he would love to move to milan if he leaves arsenal and then i read on the web that he sent his agent to talk with them . and then he ensures he is a gooner . so confusing .
arsene said he never doubted cescs cmmittment to the club but the problem is cesc has to affirm this every couple of months

Excellent interview! It’s nice he takes the time to mention how superb the fans have been to him but I wonder how superb he thinks the fans at the Emirates now probably thinks hes never seen a worse bunch in his life.

That webster ruling worries me….there was another similar ruling wasn’t there? These rulings give quite a lot of power to players. I know they haven’t been exercised by players properly yet, but once/if they start to use these rulings, then people will be trying to use them all the time.
I don’t think cesc (well i hope he doesn’t) would use such a ruling. That wouldn’t really be fair to the club or arsene, as they wouldn’t get any money for him- and after he said that he owes wenger, I think he wouldn’t follow such a step. But apparently hleb was going to/did threaten to use that…don’t know how true that is…..
I agree with you Rosie and I wasn’t saying I think he should have to yell and shout but I I know in the english media that there are a lot of old school hacks who expect to see the captain yelling instructions and urging players on because Beckham was never a vocal captain and they criticised him for it for years, he got a tonne of stick for being too quiet.

ne things in life to anyone but there’s only three persons that I owne things and that’s my Dad, Mum and Arsene Wenger” – I took that as basically “I don’t owe anyone anything in life apart from my Dad, Mum and Arsene Wenger.”George, I know he may get criticised by some old school reporters and fans if he is not a vocal captain but Arsene has already said he doesn’t believe in that style – and I think the main thing is for Cesc just to be true to himself because it doesn’t matter what you do or don’t do in football there is always going to be someone who will criticise you.
Cesc is a great captain for us really pure class just love him….

It’s interesting what he says about being a captain in the more ’spanish’ sense. I hope he will make some slight compromise and allow for the fact he is at an english club because he will get a tonne of stick sooner or later if he isn’t a bit verbal now and then.
Nice interview there is one part I don’t get though. He says he doesn’t own anyone and then he says there are three people he owns? Obviously he means owes but it’s still unclear as to what he means, so what do you think he was driving at? Anyway it’s very sweet that he is so loyal to Arsene and they have such a great connection!
