Arsenal 1 – 0 Wigan
{Support Eboue and the team: I know many gooners are really embarrassed by the behaviour of some ‘so-called’ fans at the game today. If you would like to send a message of support to Eboue and the team, you can do so by sending a message via Arsenal.com click here and if there are a lot of messages of support I am hopeful that Eboue will, at the very least, be made aware.}
Arsenal secured three points and made it three from three. A first half goal by Adebayor from a Fabregas pass was enough to end Wigan’s five game unbeaten run. The gunners came close to adding to their tally on a couple of occasions with Cesc creating a great opportunity for van Persie that he was unable to convert and Adebayor and Denilson also going close. Some fine goal-keeping from Almunia allowed the gunners to keep a clean sheet and earn a battling victory. Match report here. First of the pictures from the match are in the photos section. Full Match of the Dayvideo highlights here.
Arsene Wenger said in his post-match press conference, when asked about Cesc’s contribution since becoming captain, “He behaves very well. we were all concerned about his knee and I am not sure he will play on Wednesday. He is doing extremely well and he is a winner.”
Cesc had a great match displaying excellent vision and making some wonderful passes. He was also tireless on defence. Man of the match for the gunners this week.

that’s good news Rose I’m sure if there was anything serious it would have been mentioned so in this instance, silence is golden!
I just got an e-mail from the club in reply to the message I sent to support Eboue, saying that my message would be passed to the players’ mail office for Eboue. I don’t know what that means but it sounds good

Well Arsene has given an injury update but there is no mention of Cesc. He said Nasri was doubtful for Wednesday’s match, that Eduardo will be playing for the reserves Dec 16th and that Rosicky is not expected back until March at the earliest now – which is a shame. So hopefully the fact that Cesc didn’t get a mention means that he is fine and will be making the trip to Porto

Thanks Plu
I can’t make it work *tears hair out and throws PC out of the window* lol the page comes up and says Cesc Fabregas interview but the player won’t load and I can’t watch it. *cries* Maybe it’s UK only? A lot of clips on the BBC site are but usually you see that irritating little message to say “not available in your territory” or something. So maybe it’s just me *cries some more* I don’t know. Anyway now I know about it I will grab a HDTV rip of the file and grab the Cesc part and upload it to Dailymotion so that everyone can see it just in case anyone has trouble like me.
Thanks again for letting me know. Really appreciate it!

I cant believe the booing! really uncalled for especially since we won the match anyway an its annoying the fact that those fans who are booing our own team are giving all arsenal fans a bad reputation! i just hope eboue knows there are alot of real fans who support the hole team no matter what!
hope cesc is better asap

I think the next time Eboue plays he is not gonna be able to touch the ball without the fans giving him an ovation. If he can just come back from this… the fans will go out of there way to let him know they are sorry about what happened. I think a few daft people started booing and then sadly becos a lot of people are sheep it catches on and takes on a life of it’s own in the moment.
I don’t think gooners are usually like that.

hi… all we have seen about Cesc’s knee is the quote from Arsene Wenger sorry. We don’t know anything else. I have a feeling that Arsenal.com won’t update the injury news area until tomorrow, maybe we’ll know more then. I think TA is right though, the fact Cesc played the full match is a good sign that if there is a problem with his knee it will hopefully be minor.
mj glad to see you back online

December 7, 2008
good your back mj! I don’t think it would be a mix up as the quote from Arsene about Cesc’s knee is on the official Aresenal site. I think as he finished yesterday’s match and didn’t have to come off it can’t be anything too serious. I think he may be rested as a precaution against FC Porto and hopefully he’ll be back in action next weekend.

the commentator on ATVO said that after he came off Eboue was crying. I really feel so bad for the lad. It’s just a game and no matter what they are paid they are still human beings and it was wrong to treat a human being like that. the fans who did that were d*cks… i sent a msg good idea to sugest that… it made me feel like at least i could do something ya know.

hi Rosie and Sambo
Thanks for everything!
What happened at the game was terrible I still can’t believe it. If people feel like that and they don’t want to support the team then they should go home. It was even worse that it was all directed at Eboue. A player who was important in the run up to the Champions League Final in 2006 and who is a good little right back. He was being played out of position and it was his first game back after what… a couple of months? Unforgiveable. Playing at home is supposed to carry a home advantage!? Yeah right! Thank god our next game is away. It’s all just so wack.
I sent a message to the club just asking them to let Eboue know he and the team have my support and I’m 100% behind them. It doesn’t really help much or change anything… but it’s all I could think of
I hope Cesc is not injured. He seemed ok? That pass he played for Robin that really should have been a goal was the best pass of the whole match, it was genius, so he didn’t look like he was carrying a niggle to me? Do you think it’s possible that there is a mix up in the quotes and that Arsene was talking about Nasri’s knee but it’s being reported as Cesc?

It was a real shame that some of the people at the match decided to vent their frustration and forgot to support the team. You never boo your own.
This was a team that already had clearly taken some near fatal blows to confidence, team spirit and belief and was struggling to relax and get into the right place to perform at their best. It was important not only to win today, but to win in a positive way.
The fans have hurt the whole team today more than they will realize. It’s a cruel irony that if the team continues to play nervy football and lack conviction, the fans will bitch but they have just contributed to ensuring that happens.

I completely agree with scarlett(cousin) and nzgooner and a few others. I go to all home games and some away games, including the Carling Cup. However, I am now seriously ashamed of being an Arsenal fan, not because of the team, the club, or any individual player, but because of our many sickening fans. For two seasons now they have picked on Song (still only 20, who will be a great player) and Eboue. This year they’ve added Denilson (19)and Bendtner (20) – and even Adebayor and Gallas. There are now a significantly large number of our ‘fans’ who are simply waiting and hoping for mistakes from the above mentioned players so as to hurl vile abuse at them. This is not being a fan.this has mostly come about since the move to the Emirates. We now fill the ground with loads of the ‘new fan’ types who want nothing more than trophies and want us to behave like Chelsea to get them.
I grew up as an Arsenal fan who knew that you were part of a club that demanded respect for fans and players of other clubs – and certainly your own. No true club fan ever boos or abuses one of their own players. If they’re in red and white, get behind them, or you damage the club.
It is time Arsene came out and condemned these people and asked them to stay away from Arsenal. Before too long, all decent fans will stay away anyway and it will get much worse. I’m already questioning whether I want to be a part of such crowds as now follow arsenal, home or away.
Only my love for the club itself is currently seeing me hang around through these very dark times.

Don’t worry Rosie we all talk in general terms. I didn’t take any offense. Also, unfortunately, it wasn’t just a vocal few. Although there were of course plenty of fans who weren’t booing there were a sizeable proportion who were, more than a few to be honest. As I’ve heard a few boos for Bendtner as I’ve mentioned before and there were even a couple today when his name was announced but it was just the usual, a few here and there nothing much. However, the booing/cheering/booing of Eboue was the loudest I have ever heard of an Arsenal player at the Emirates so plenty were joining in. It was bang out of order.

Hi Scarlett and nzgooner
I hope what I wrote didn’t make you feel worse. What I should have said is I’m ashamed of the fans that booed sorry. I realise there must have been a lot of fans like you who really didn’t like what was happening and who are REAL fans.
I’m glad you came and posted because it is important that we all remember it was some vocal fans and that most of our home support is not like that.

Hi, I went to the game today and as an arsenal fan i never felt so embarssed for the so-called fans that support this team and players. you never boo your players period. these fans are now doing the work of our enemies and at this point we fans dont deserve to win anything. as much as i hate the fans and club of liverpool, have u ever seen them boo one of their own or stop singing, no. im glad we won but to do you think the players went to the lockeroom to celebrate, no they probably spent the time of cheering up eboue . How many of our players will want to stay because they love the fans? none. Now they know that they are fair weather fans. These fans show no loyalty why should players show any loyalty to them. glad they won and good goal bye ade, who is another player who gets stick for no reaon.
you know the ones booing eboue are not the real fans since we moved in the emirates, we have an extra 20,000 seats and most of these people in the stadium are bandwagners.(plus u dont get the real fans anymore cuz of the price of the tickets are too high) I have noticed more people around me in the ground since we moved who seem not to know too much about what they are talking about, this is just the proof. The sheer number of people cheering Eboues exit shocked me. anyways sorry for the long comment and nice website. cheers

I think this might be the worst day I’ve ever had as a supporter and that is saying something. I am gutted. Some of our fans are so plastic. I don’t know what to say. Look Eboue had a terrible game. He was out of position, he kept giving the ball away, it wasn’t good. But some fans really destroyed his confidence further.
It’s really sickening because the players are on the pitch and they are battling and they are hearing all this negativity and booing and abuse pouring out of some sections of the stands. I just hope the players won’t think that all the fans are like that. I don’t want them to think a few noisy clueless moronic f**ks represent us all because they don’t.
I am gutted just so gutted. I feel as bad as I feel when we lose. I felt sorry for Eboue people say he doesn’t try but I do think he was giving it his best and the way they sarcastically cheered him off was just vicious.

It would seem from Arsene’s comment that Cesc has some injury to his knee though the nature and extent is unclear. The fact he says “we were all concerned about his knee” suggests he was aware of the problem so perhaps he picked it up in training or in the first half… but it was obviously possible for him to play…so hopefully that means it’s not too bad…hopefully he will now be rested against Porto. As we have already qualified so there is no reason for Cesc to play even if he were 100% fit. Fingers crossed he’s 100% for the trip to ‘Boro.
The booing today was crap. It wasn’t a great performance from the team but we got the result. I’ve seen us play better and walk away with no points so I’d rather have this any day of the week.
I’ll post any injury news that I can find but so far a quick search on google brings up nothing about Cesc being injured.

December 6, 2008
so did Cesc pick up a knock? Bugger. Hope it’s nothing much.
I thought he was our best player again today. Although we were patchy today and the performance was a little below par I thought that on those occasions when we clicked into gear that some of our one touch pass and move football was excellent and Cesc was at the heart of those moves,,, running through the midfield and linking with rvp or Ade.
I will not say anything about the sitter rvp missed,,, I am being good.

you don’t boo the shirt. they’re our players wearing our badge. if they are having a nightmare then just clap politely when they are subbed and be gald they are off and you haven’t conceded. Eboue is well liked in the team and I think the whole team would have been sorry to see him treated like that. It was a really stupid way to undermine the team with 5 minutes to go.
If the fans had supported the team the way they should have, and the team had hung on for the win, and everyone celebrated at the final whistle, then this could have been a really positive morale booster for the team, but our own fans have singlehandedly turned it into an awful day and the players will crawl away from this feeling like crap. Sabotaged by our own fans.

No worries Rosie take your time. Hopefully mj will be back with us soon!
It was a pity Nasri got injured and Eboue had to come on… after all he’s hardly a left winger, he’s not played in a while is hardly match fit. The way he was treated by the fans just stinks on so many levels, the poor guy really… I feel for him.
I hope Samir is ok, it didn’t look too serious, so hopefully he’ll be back soon.

I am utterly disgusted by the booing. Has really pissed me off. I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of Eboue, but booing your own player is not justifiable. Especially when they have just come back from a fricking injury. Every single one of those fans who booed are a disgrace to the team. Do that not realise that booing a player undermines that players confidence, as well as the players around him? Who wants to play at a club where fans boo their own players? Argh. And they call themselves supporters.
Glad we won the game.

The photos might be a bit slow coming today folks as mj’s ISP is having an outage and Sam and I are in Jaipur and our connection is going up and down like a brides nightie sorry.
Well I am ashamed of our fans. I think it was disgraceful and I always thought all gooners had a bit more class. You have to support the team everyone knows it’s been a difficult time but the team is beginning to build a few wins and it’s a step in the right direction. So now is not the time to be putting the boot in to our own players which effects the whole team. It is never ever acceptable to boo it is always pure stupidity BUT we were winning. You get behind your team when they are battling to hang on to the final whistle.
I thought the team played quite well, certainly even Eboue with his mistakes – was not so poor as to deserve for the fans to turn nasty the way they did. I really am lost for words.

Cesc keeps on getting stronger, tried to boss the game more in the second half, busting forward from midfield with some great runs, and his passing is getting back to its best, should of had a couple of assists today. Was a shame that we weren’t able to put a couple more goals away and the game to bed. I didnt like how often he was playing deeper than Song though.
Agree with you all that the booing was an embarrassment.

December 6, 2008
Thought we looked good until the last 20 minutes when we panicked a bit. The problem lies in the midfield as usual, but I gotta say I like the look of the Cesc-Song partnership. I think it’s a better option than the Cesc-Denilson.
In the end, it was a good result. The team needed to get back to winning.
The support were an embarrassment. No excuse for booing your own player like that during a match.

Made up we won but, OMG ! the booing for Eboue, that was unbelievable….even the commentators said it was bad – and they never say nothing nice about the Arsenal….some great work from Fab in the midfield – showed the benefit of his superior fitness against the Wigan side in the second half….we should have scored more goals tonight and the defence looked kinda nervy during the last few minutes but, a win is a win…three more points ….now onward to Boro

three from three for el capitan! The result is what matters at this stage.
the fans were clueless fancy carrying on like that when we are leading 1-0 with 5 minutes on the clock in a nervy game.
TA I don’t know that we played well I think you are stretching it. Denilson to be fair did a bit better today he is adapting to the wing. Cesc made a few nice passes but our midfield is still out of balance and play like they have never met before. Our defence was shakey. Still we got there! That’s the main thing.

December 6, 2008
what the f**k was that from the fans? No call for that kind of crap. Eboue didn’t play well but hell.
I thought we played well we were unlucky not to win 3 or 4 nil really. Once Cattermole tired Cesc dominated in the second half although he seemed to be playing deeper. He broke up play and tackled more than Song I would have liked to see it the other way round but I’m happy with the win.
