Cesc in La Gazzetta dello Sport

Cesc Fabregas celebrates his winning penalty

There is an interview with our new captain in La Gazzetta dello Sport today. Here is a quick translation

LONDON, December 4, 2008 – He was directly responsible for the elimination of Italy in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 and the decisive way in which Spain won the semifinals. Francesc “Cesc” Fabregas Soler is only 21 years old, but he is already the Arsenal captain and champion of Europe with Spain. He told us,

“I think we met the Azzurri too early. I would have preferred to face them in the final. Either way, I believe Italian fans can be happy: you lifted the World Cup and we just hoisted the European trophy. Would you like to swap?”

Q: What are your personal goals for the near future?

“My goal is always the same, always: grow as a player and as a man. More specifically, my goals relate to Arsenal, with whom I hope to be able to win the Premier and the Champions League, both goals within our reach. For the national team, right now, the goal is qualification for the World Cup 2010 .”

Q: To who are you most indebted for your success?

“To my parents. They have always supported me and in the right way, they have never put pressure on me. I am still very close to them.”

Q: Which player has inspired you?

“My fellow countryman, the great Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola, who manages Barcelona. He was a midfielder like me, and has a style of game I like to emulate. I think he is one of the best midfielders of all time, perhaps the best, at least in modern football …”.

Q: Who is the best player with whom (or against whom) you have played?

“It is another midfielder: Patrick Vieira. I have played with him at Arsenal, when I was starting out. He is very strong and fast and he is impossible to mark. He’s the kind of player you hope you won’t ever have to play against. But perhaps this year I will play him in the Champions League.”

Q: Do you follow Italian football? What team do you prefer to watch or would you play for IF you came to Italy?

“AC Milan, without doubt. I think they are the Italian team that plays the best football. I mean, in Serie A there are many strong teams: Inter, Juventus, Roma, but almost all rely too much on their stars.

They run into trouble as soon as these are out injured. On the other hand, Milan lean on the group and their organization. I feel this is a winning mentality and a philosophy that I approve of.”

*As you can see nothing was said to in any way imply, infer or hint at any interest in transferring to AC Milan. However, the UK media implied that it was, so Cesc issued the following statement through Arsenal.com Thanks to George and Samantha for the heads up!

“It is true that I said I admire Milan for their rich history and the way they play football but that is as far as the story goes,” said Fabregas.

“I am honoured to be wearing the captain’s armband for Arsenal and I am 100 per cent committed to this Club. My future is here.”

The Spanish AS Sports Awards were held last night in Madrid and the Spanish National Team received the prestigious Premios AS Del Deporte Award in recognition of their victory at the European Championships. Cesc was unable to attend but Iker Casillas, Rubén de la Red, Sergio García, Juan Gutiérrez ‘Juanito’, David Silva, Marcos Senna, Joan Capdevila and Santiago Cazorla accepted the award on behalf of the team. More details here. Congratulations to the team.

  • Hi bubbaaa :) Cesc was asked very specific questions so I wouldn’t make too much of him not mentioning his g/f. He doesn’t always, there are lots of interviews where he doesn’t. I wouldn’t read anything into that lol

George I agree with TA Eva could do a lot worse :D

  • I would like to mention here that i had read in local paper sometime back..during EURO that Calderon says he is always a great fan of Fab and it is his dream to bring Fab to Real Madrid to play alongside Raul.

Calderon also said that most club managers wish to have Fab ..so definitely rumours about Fab transfer will come out again n again.

It proved that Captain Fab is simply fabulous.

  • the other thing with all the transfer target stories is that really they are pretty irrelevant. I mean Manchester City can bid, Barcelona can bid, Real Madrid can bid but there will simply be a polite no thank you from Arsenal so where is the news in that?

I am glad I am not married to Joan Laporta on Christmas morning you would wake up and he would tell you that he was going to buy you a beautiful diamond ring but the store said sorry no we are out of stock we can not sell to you lol I like a man who does not tell me what he is going to do but shows me what he has done :D

  • Eva would be lucky to have you George.

I see Cristiano Ronaldo has come out and said he almost signed for us. I think when he realised the club swimming pool doesn’t have a diving board he decided to give us a miss. Nowhere for the lad to practice. :D Pity.

  • that’s such good news about Eddie! I wonder how Rosicky is doing. When we get those two back it’s gonne feel like we made 2 super-signings!

mj don’t worry about the stupid spanish press they’re just like the stupid english press always stirring and making stuff up. I guess it must be easier than actual journalism,,, just sit at your desk and think what shall I make up today lol Also they said in Sport that Arsene Wenger might take the job at Real Madrid,,, yeah and I might start dating Eva Mendes. Actually I think I have a better chance with Eva than Calderon has with Arsene lol

  • Thanks Tixi I already saw it and normally I would post when Cesc is a cover-boy! BUT in this case there is no interview with him and no new pictures. The article seems to just be referring to the nice compliment Cesc paid to Guardiola yesterday and then there is a whole lot of transfer speculation, that is of little interest because 1. we do not know how true it is and 2. If we posted every article where a newspaper claims a club wants to bid for Cesc our whole site would just be filled with them lol

    But thanks anyway :D

Hi Emma :D Your spelling and writing is just fine!

  • wow it makes such a difference to see the question.

I saw one fan saying when he was asked who would he hypothetically play for in Italy he should not have answered he should just say I am at Arsenal full stop.

BUT they do not realise that in the question he is also asked who he watches and it would sound ridiculous to refuse to answer such a harmless question.
