Captain Fabulous!

Captain Fabregas

The Daily Mail and The Express have reported that Cesc Fabregas will replace William Gallas as Arsenal’s permanent captain when he returns to duty in next Tuesday’s Champions League match at home to Dynamo Kiev.

Cesc’s hometown sports paper, sports.es, which is based in Barcelona, are also reporting in the story ‘Cesc, capitán del Arsenal’, that Cesc has been named as Arsenal’s new captain by Arsene Wenger.

We are still awaiting official confirmation but based on the Daily Mail, Express and the report in Sport.es, it would appear it is time to congratulate Captain Fabregas!

The Guardian has a good article on why Cesc would make a good captain here’s an excerpt

Fábregas is the only sensible choice if the team are to forge a new identity and spirit. He has behaved like a captain-elect for most of Gallas’s fraught term. He might be fatigued. He might be young – at 21 years and seven months he is only just older than Tony Adams was when he became Arsenal’s youngest ever captain. No matter. He is bright, reasonable, talkative, inspiring and quite prepared to fight whatever battle is necessary on behalf of his team. He is made of the right stuff.

You can read the full story here.

Ade backs Cesc captaincy

Yesterday, Skysports reported that Adebayor had expressed his support for Cesc being a future Arsenal captain at the launch of FIFA09 in mid-November. Ade said:

He’s got the character. He can be Arsenal captain in the future, for sure. He is a good person.”

“He’s one of the best midfielders in the world. I think everyone knows that. He’s a very good player and he is enjoying himself at Arsenal.”

Manchester City 3 – 0 Arsenal

Cesc did not play for Arsenal against Manchester City, as he was serving a one match suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card during the Aston Villa game. The gunners were also without Toure, Sagna, Walcott and Adebayor due to injury. The team recorded their fifth loss of the season. Match report here.

  • I have said all along that we should give the Captaincy to Cesc. Not just because he is a world class player but because he genuinely cares about the club and also is very level headed in front of the cameras.

He is an intelligent young man who could really help the boys to rally around.

  • Cesc is the man for the job! I can understand people who are worried about the captaincy increasing the pressure he is under but I really think he will rise to the challenge and the club needs him he is the only one who can do the job. He is going to be an Arsenal Legend!!

  • Ditto nzgooner! :D That is how I feel too!

Thanks Georgie :D I hope the Mirror is right… but if it was going to be Almunia for the rest of the season why didn’t they just say that on Saturday? I hope it is officially announced one way or the other tomorrow. It’s not good to drag it out sooner all this is cleared up and the speculation stops the better.

  • The Mirror says that Almunia may keep the armband for the rest of the season. The Daily Mail have put out a story tonight saying it’s between Cesc Fabregas and Gael Clichy and Cesc is “likely” to get it but that’s a change from the last two days where they have been saying he will get it. The Daily Star is saying it will be Cesc. We’ll just have to wait and see which papers were right and wrong!

  • I think Cesc has what it takes to be captain but I’m on the fence at the moment as to whether it’s the best thing right now.

I know he is already under a lot of pressure. Those of you who think the captaincy won’t make a big difference to the amount of pressure he feels and that it is simply a matter of making the role he already plays official, may be right.

My reservation is that he is somehow expected to carry a midfield with players like Denilson, Eboue, Diaby, Song and even the promising, but so far mostly missing, Nasri around him. It would seem to me that is a difficult enough job right there. I’m not sure tasking him with lifting the entire team as well is fair or the right thing to do to a 21 year old, given that Arsenal is in a slump.

I would like Cesc to be the captain in the future but I’m not sure about now.

  • Fabregas is a born leader. His intelligence, humble attitude, and sheer desire to win everything from the Champions League to a game of skittles, will make him the best captain we’ve ever had. I am sure of it.

    Bring it on I say!!

  • I agree with the Guardian. He is the only one out of the squad who seems like he could succeed as captain. No-one else stands out.

And the man city game…oh dear…that was not pleasant to watch. Robinho’s goal was great though.

By the way, you know the official cesc faberegas site, it says they have started up a cesc fabregas facebook, but it doesn’t give a direct link, and there are so many people on there who have made up so many false accounts. Do you guys know the real facebook that his family has set up?

  • Good post DC :D You are right. Cesc has been the captain in everything but name and he certainly deserves to be made captain. This could be great for Cesc so I will stop being a pessimist lol He may really love the extra responsibility. Also despite all the nay-sayers I still have faith in Arsene and this team and I do think they have talent and they will turn the corner soon :D

  • You might all think I go on excessively about team psychology but after this weeks events I feel vindicated in my belief that the teams problems have been pre-dominantly mental. It would seem factions in the dressing room have poisoned the team spirit.

Cesc will indeed be the best possible man to heal the rifts and it will be good for morale to have a skipper that is respected.

I would not be too concerned about the captaincy increasing the amount of criticism Cesc receives. After all he was already a magnet for fan frustration by virtue of being the star player, who people expect the most from. It seems to me that he was already carrying the burden just without the armband and so it is only right and fitting that he should have it.

    http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/72464

TA you hav a point,,, dats de risk!!,,, you either bond as a team or go back to work and start polishing your cv lol it can go either way. Still people like Cesc and Nasri missed pre-season and with Gallas on ‘gardening leave’ whatever the fook that means,,, maybe they should try some team bonding mini-break!!

    George

    November 23, 2008

  • Hiya Robbie :D Don’t get me wrong I think Cesc would do a great job I’m just concerned about the set of circumstances.

Sambo I don’t know that the club will confirm it till Monday, after all with Cesc not playing this weekend, he’s probably in Barcelona right now and if it’s all true then the press will want to interview him when it’s official so it may not all happen till Monday you know. As the club would have a press conference Monday anyway cos they always do the day before a Champions League match. Note to self: they’ll have a training session that’s open to the media and so I better remember to look for the photos this time! If I forget someone remind me k!

    mj

    November 22, 2008

  • George that’s what they do at pre-season man. At least it’s meant to be they go off to some camp and all hang-out for a couple of weeks, training and larking about but maybe with our lot they just decided by the end of it they couldn’t stand each other lol

  • hahahaha thanks George seriously I’m so down and you made me laugh out loud, just about had a coke all over the keyboard moment

LOL @ the idea of sending Arsenal on a corporate bootcamp! Unfortunately the players insurance would prevent them from doing anything very risky and perhaps it’s just as well, I have a feeling that when it came William’s turn to jump everybody might just step back and “forget” to catch him!

Manchester United drew with Villa we are 5th but only by a point so nothing to worry about just yet!

    Rose

    November 22, 2008

  • nah Sambo that goal shouldn’t have stood,,, the FA have changed the rules so you can’t do that to the keeper.

Well Rose if you thought people were hysterical after Aston Villa get ready for more of the same x 10 ,,, we got a game Tuesday so hopefully we can turn things around then.

Arsene is doing the right thing with regards to Gallas, just gotta circle the wagons now. get at least a draw,,, hopefully a win Tuesday and then once things are steadier get the team together.

I don’t care if they are rich boys. Make them go on a retreat together. I’m f**king serious. Stick them in the middle of nowhere for a few days let them punch each other if required, just get it out, get it over, f**king bond and get their heads right. We do that at work couple time a year. Go off and get drunk together, do a few things like rope courses where you got to jump and trust the buggers in your department to catch you. It’s not a bad idea for making people feel like a team.

    George

    November 22, 2008

  • Bugger about Robin’s goal not that it would have mattered but it should have stood.

Arsene said about Gallas “Of course he has a future at the club, but the less we talk the better it is. We can change a captain without having to make a political issue of it.”

But if he had a future why didn’t he play today? If he refused then he shouldn’t have a future and if Wenger told him to stay behind then doesn’t that show a fundamental break down of trust?

Still no word on Cesc being captain outside of these two papers and a couple of blogs. So still waiting…

    November 22, 2008

  • Well look on the bright side. Chelsea and Liverpool drew so we’re 10 points rather than 12 points off the top and with any luck Manchester United can beat Villa to help us stay in the top four.

It was a bad game today but we’ll come through this, the team is just in a bad place mentally right now. I just hope they can pick themselves up soon.

I don’t think there’s any point singling out specific players for criticism, just one of those days.

Bri, I hear you the midfield issues, are obviously more important right now than the captaincy. I don’t think Denilson is as bad as you are suggesting but I also don’t think he is quite as good as some have made out, it’s just today he had more of the “mission impossible” job that Cesc usually has, in other words he was expected to try and create chances, and of course he isn’t the player Cesc is but few are, and so everyone is saying he was terrible. It’s still a team issue.

We are in agreement though on the side needing strengthening. We don’t have sufficient class in all positions let alone any squad depth.

    November 22, 2008

  • I can’t believe Manchester United was only two weeks ago. I noticed at the end of that match Cesc looked completely knackered and some of you said at the time, how he was everywhere and was tremendous for us… well I think even I under estimated the extent to which he did the work of about 2 players box to box that day. Everyone focussed on Nasri because of the brace and fair enough but I now realise the workl load Fab carried. He has been trying to do the job of about 2 players every game and people say he looks tired. No shit.

Today I realised clearly exactly why he looks tired he has NO midfield partner at all, he babysits Denilson every inch of the way and the people who have been complaining that Denilson is being unfairly blamed for Fab. WAKE UP PEOPLE!! That’s been cruelly exposed for the joke it is. Fab is carrying Denilson big time! Denilson king of the 5 yard pass sideways, is not ready he needs to go back to the CC team for another season and then be bought through and Cesc deserves a decent partner.

Quite frankly, I will back Cesc as captain but I would also be quite happy if he didn’t get it right now. But what I really wish for Cesc, what Arsene has to do, is give Cesc decent players around him so that he can play his game beginning with a decent midfield partner. That is the big issue. At 21 whether he is captain or not is a case of que sera sera but limiting his game, preventing him from fufilling his potential, playing with players that won’t help him develop one bit … that’s a serious problem.

Guess it was my week for a rant.

  • MJ….although, I agree with you in principle….I can’t help but, think if anyone can pull this “rag tag youngsters’ and doddling ole folks” together it’s CESC!….Personally , I think Kolo would make a more appropriate Captain but, who knows….one would think , Cesc would have spoken to Xavi & Xabi over the week about Arsenal and what’s going on (can’t imagine) he wouldn’t -for a more experienced opinion….So…fingers crossed all goes well , whatever is decided ! ;D

  • That was painful. I decided just to add a note about today’s match couldn’t really be bothered creating a separate post for that. There’s so much I could say but it’s all negative so in the interests of not bringing everyone down further I’ll shut it.

  • I hope Sport.es and the Daily Mail were lying and just made it up after watching today’s game. I mean seriously Tony Adams might have been 21 when he was made captain but he had a lot more to work with. The captaincy of Arsenal at the moment isn’t an honor it’s a ticking bomb that will blow up in the face of whoever it is handed too.

Sorry to be so negative but it’s how I feel at the moment. I’ll try and cheer up…

He did realy earned it :) all the hard work that he make in the field is what makes him the best for THE armband .

But I’m realy nervous about it too coz the responsibility that comes with the armband is sooooooooo HUGE >>> & he’s just too young for it >>> That’s why Ithink Arsene should delay this decision & give the armband to Toure or Almunia ….

  • I think it will all be confirmed after today’s match. Fab will be a huge improvement over Gallas because he gets on well with everyone. Gallas had become pretty isolated in the dressing room by the sounds of it.

I think we’ll get a good result today, I think the team will bounce back well and be fired up by the changes. Should be good for the team. GO GUNNERS!

On the one hand it is so exciting to see this news and on the other hand I am nervous about how much criticism he will receive in what can be a very tough and thankless job. It’s a difficult time at Arsenal and a difficult time to take this huge responsibility on. Still it is good for the club to have an intelligent, loyal, captain who has heart and spirit and will do his best. :D
