Spain 3 – 0 Chile
The perfect end to a pefect year for ‘la roja’ with a great win over Chile with 3 goals courtesy of Villa (penalty), Torres and Cazorla. Match summary here. The first of the photos from the match are in the latest photos section. You can watch the goals online here.
Cesc Fabregas lined up in an unfamiliar role on the right of midfield. He played a good game, creating Spain’s first attack in the opening minutes with a great pass and worked tirelessly in defense.
AS Diario made special note of four players performance Torres, Villa, Xavi and Cesc this is what they said:
Cesc.
I believe it says (approximately allowing for the fact my spanish sucks)
Cesc. Helped behind with the defense
He completed a good game as attacking midfielder. His work in defense was very important and he provided the defensive cover that was needed, Cesc was present in the central role to contest the possession. He committed very few errors and only lost 4 balls*. On top of providing defense he was able to make beautiful runs that drew to him the attention of more than one Chilean player, who repeatedly fouled him to stop him. He had one clear sight on goal but he did not do well as he had a chance to beat Bravo (the Chilean GK) and wasted it.
* He had more than 90% passing accuracy and lost possession the least of anyone in the spanish midfield.

Thanks for the links George and TA
sport.es are reporting the appointment too now so that’s 3 sources and 2 actual papers so Sambo is putting the news up now as we think it’s 99% likely to be correct. Wow Cesc is captain. Just wow. I always knew he would be one day but just would never ever have guessed it would happen this week!

Hey George TA, super sleuths extraordinaire thanks for keeping us up to date fellas. lol I have a post already to go but I haven’t hit the publish button because I can’t find anything about Cesc being captain anywhere besides the sources you’ve mentioned. And I would have thought it would be all over so … I’m hesitating waiting for Skysport or the BBC or reuters or someone to confirm it.
Anyway if you see anything else let me know!

hey according to the Daily mail Cesc is going to captain wooooooooooooo
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1088185/Loudmouth-Gallas-gets-boot-Wenger-leaves-sacked-skipper-City-trip.html
Gallas has been left behind in London and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia will wear the armband at Eastlands. Midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who is suspended today, will be the permanent replacement.

hey I just saw that according to this Arsenal blog Cesc is going to be captain!! I hope it’s true
I know some of you guys aren’t wild with enthusiasm about the idea but I really think it’s best for the club

I think Fabregas could handle the job even though he is 21 and the armband is usually given to an older player. Fab is a remarkable player at his best and I think he could be a unifying force which this team desperately needs by the sounds of things. How many players could claim good relationships with Robin, Ade and even Gallas. He is a peacemaker, so he is the right man for the job.

Cesc for Captain!! He has more than 200 Arsenal caps. He is a European Champion. He is intelligent and gets on well with his team-mates. He the only choice!!!!

Yeah bri I saw that. I wasn’t sure that it would happen today but it has. So now the wait to see who the new captain will be? Al? Kolo? Cesc? Gael? Robin?
Still, if people think hes revealed things now just wait as he is really emotional and I would say all sorts of sh*t will come out in the next couple of months. Hope I’m wrong but he doesn’t strike me as someone who is going to have any dignity about this.

hey Gallas has been stripped of the captaincy it’s on skysports now! He’s not going to travel with the team to Manchester City so I guess he’ll just be a dead weight till he can be sold in January.
It’s a million miles from the ideal situation but I think it is the best thing to do for the team.

Sam – Elmundo put out that story that Arsenal have banned Cesc from mentioning Barcelona. They claimed that’s why he declined to be interviewed while he was in Spain this week.
The funny thing is he did do one little press thing for the rfef partnership with ahorra energia – who the Spanish team made the “save energy” ad for – and Elmundo published a little article from the press conference with Xabi, Torres, Cesc, Guiza and Pepe and the only topic was – you guessed it – Barcelona lol it was nothing much or I would have posted it. He just said Pep had been key to FC Barcelona’s season so far and he backed Valdes for the Zamora. It was very brief.
Anyway so I don’t think there is a ban lol I just think after Aston Villa he probably didn’t feel like doing press especially after what happened during the last International week. I think he is a very wise man!
There are so many little stories today. I feel we should make a post but then it’s all either made up, old quotes that have been recycled, or captaincy speculation and I don’t want to post anything until it is more than speculation. So for now I’ll just wait.
That ANR post is intriguing but you’d think it would be on skysports by now if it were true and I haven’t heard anything!
TA – Cesc actually said in an interview in August, that he thought he wasn’t old enough and that his career has already been ‘accelerated’ enough and that he preferred to wait. He might have been being diplomatic though, I don’t know
Rose
November 21, 2008
And Skysport dredged up some quote from 3 weeks ago from Adebayor where he says he thinks Cesc will make a good future captain of Arsenal nice of them to save it for this moment! And make it sound like he said it today.
I would really like Cesc to be captain but I can understand why you guys think it might be less of an honor and more of a mission impossible at present but Cesc is very mature for his age and he has said in the past that he’d like the job

Thanks. I fixed the link for you George it was really long.
Hmmm the players electing a captain rather than Wenger appointing one? Well I guess if there’s any truth to this it should come through the main stream press soon enough.
Ha ha the Daily Mail just put out an article to say that Arsenal have banned Cesc from talking about the B-word Barcelona in interviews. That can not be for real lol
Today just gets weirder and weirder.

Fab might be the best option Arsenal has but that doesn’t mean becoming captain right now is the best option for Fab.
These would be crappy circumstances to become captain in and at 21 to deal with an out of sorts dressing room? No he already carries a heavy burden as is.
I think if he was made captain he’d step up but it’s a huge ask.
which arsenal blogs are saying he quit?
sam
November 21, 2008
Some Arsenal blogs say Gallas has quit as captain,,, so if thats true, do you really want it to be Toure? It might be a little soon but isn’t Fab still the best option we have?
George

Thanks for the link jj
I don’t know who to vote for! I would like to see Cesc become captain in the future but I don’t think now is the right time. I’m with mj on this. I would vote for Toure as captain and Cesc as vice-captain but Kolo may not be a regular starter.
Still it probably doesn’t matter anyway as I don’t think Gallas will lose the captaincy at this point in the season.
I agree with you Sam the interview in french will have been spun to make it sound as bad as possible.
TA I totally agree with what you said about the fighting, as you may recall back in September when you accused me of being a closet Hull City supporter
I said the big thing Hull had going for them was that they played as a team and had great unity and spirit and that it made them greater than than the sum of their parts. Likewise, I said we really had to do something about our team dynamic and that still stands.
I guess when that memo from the “team shrink” hit the media, telling the players to play for each other and play as a team, we should have got the clue then, that Arsene was trying to address some dressing room issues.
I really hope they can find a way to get past this and play as a team because until they do, they won’t play to their potential.

I don’t want Cesc to be made captain. I really think it is too much to ask of him he is only 21. I think he will be a great captain one day but it’s too soon.
Agree with most of what y’all have said. Gallas has already said he wants to go back to France and he even listed the 4 clubs he was interested in, it was like a “for sale” ad. So adios. Don’t let the door hit ya in the ass on the way out.

Speaking of Cashley ‘I wrote the stupidest biography ever’ Hole,,, seriously who the hell would want to read William Gallas’s auto-biography?
I’d like to see the armband given to Cesc. He could have jumped ship like Hleb and Flamini did he had to have had an idea of some of the clubs problems before this season started but he chose to stay and be loyal to Wenger and that shows character.
George
November 21, 2008
True. They do need to sort it.
I have to say, I hate this ‘I won’t name names but the player was 6 years younger than me’ crap as it really reminds me of Cashley and his I won’t say who threw the pizza but it wasn’t anyone english bs. Everyone is assuming Gallas meant rvp but they might be wrong. Eboue and Sagna are also 25 and anyway does anyone have any real confidence in Billy’s arithmetic?
He must have decided to leave as this is just too stupid a thing to do if you had any intention of staying.
sam
November 21, 2008
I think you do have to worry about the in-fighting.
Cesc is ‘supposed’ to be out of form according to some but when he played for Spain against Belgium and Chile he put in good shifts. There is a good spirit within the Spain camp and they work together on the pitch. Like the thing Rose posted said, Cesc made almost no errors, retained possession, was good on defense and making runs.
He seems to be having a much harder time playing at Arsenal where the team-mates around you don’t make themselves open for the ball, don’t make the runs off the ball and don’t pick out your runs or do anything much to support you because everyone is too busy squabbling to play for each other. So all this fighting, failing to work together, splits within the team are clearly taking a real toll. It needs sorting.
(and with that I sorta got things back on topic)
TA
November 21, 2008
To be fair. Hes given this interview in french while he was on international duty and the british media have translated it… now we all know how very little can be turned into a hell of a lot in that situation because we’ve seen how quotes from Cesc in the spanish press have been blown out of all proportion. So you need to take that into account before assuming that the media will have accurately reported this. Accuracy and media don’t really belong in the same sentence.
Look it’s a shame he said whatever he said, and a bigger shame that it’s been made into big thing in the press but personally my biggest concern isn’t if he sulked after Tottenham or even that the team are having a few in-fights. I’m most worried that this will put off potential signings as there’s often competition, the best players usually have choices and who will want to join Arsenal when we seem like a club with a divided dressing room, that lurches from crisis to crisis.

FREE WILLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s time to release William Gallas from his trapped existence at the Emirates where he lives a sad life on 80k a week. Where he receives no more criticism than Adebayor or Cesc but nevertheless feels he is a persecuted man. Poor Billy has been insulted when he was at work!! This is simply unacceptable. loads of people work for sod all in call centers and the customers constantly tell them to go f**k themselves… my heart bleeds for Willy. Something must be done to relieve his suffering!!
Pretty bloody clear now hes said all this that there was nothing wrong with his hamstring. He didn’t play after the Tottenham game cos he was having a sulk. So we went up to Stoke City and took a battering and he didn’t stand shoulder to shoulder with his team-mates because there had been a bust-up. Beyond pathetic.

November 21, 2008
Fair enough. Although having a joke for your captain and having lots of in-fighting within the team affects Cesc as a player…
I want Gallas sold, released whatever in January. Let Toure and Djourou play together. He has gone too far this time. He is under-mining the team at a time when the club is already in trouble. They should be forging bonds behind close doors in the face of adversity, instead Gallas runs to the press to mouth off because he doesn’t want the blame . What a leader. The part I really object too is
We are not brave enough in battle. I think we need to be soldiers. We have to be warriors. There are teams who can do it well against us and we have to be able to face up to these attacks. That is how THEY [Arsenal's young players] will forge their character and how THEY will get experience. Even though THEY’VE played a certain number of matches, THEY’RE still young and still learning.”
You shouldn’t criticize in the public domain but when you say WE and include yourself in what you are saying then it can be ok, because you are saying WE need to be better and you are urging your team on. But once you, especially a captain, start saying THEY. You need to leave.
And to think he gave this interview because he has an auto-biography out today. I wonder what will be in that.

Hi TA
No, sorry we only post news photos and videos that are specifically about Cesc here. You can discuss it to death on all the general Arsenal sites though.
Gallas is still captain. Despite the media claims I don’t think Arsene will change that right now
Hi Kate, I don’t think their is any reason to think that Cesc will leave. He is fully committed to the club and I see no point in speculating. I follow la liga already. I watch revista de la liga every week and I watch all FC Barcelona games and some Real Madrid. My family support Arsenal and have done for several generations so Arsenal is my number one allegiance but I watch a lot of teams and I’m a fan of Lionel Messi even though he doesn’t play for Arsenal and I’m still a Titi fan so I see no reason why I wouldn’t still be a fan of Cesc if he played for another club but he doesn’t he plays for Arsenal

Thanks Sam. Seems pointless to have a friendly so far away from a competitive fixture. it’s been bloody expensive for Arsenal too with 2 injuries and Theo will be out for ages.
What is with Gallas? You don’t wash dirty laundry in public. What happens in the dressing room stays in the dressing room that’s like a golden f**king rule.
Great the club is looking more like a bad soap opera every day.

Hi Kate, as Bri says Cesc is suspended and will next play in the Champions League next Tuesday against Dynamo Kiev. I don’t know if Cesc will leave I really hope not. It’s impossible for any of us to know but if he does leave I think he will have a lot of different reasons and he is not going to decide based only on whether we win a trophy or not. I will always be a fan of Cesc’s wherever he plays but I will always be a gooner too and I would always support Arsenal ahead of any team!
I mean NZ will play Spain in the confederations cup. Rose Sam and I are all New Zealanders. Now NZ is a rugby country and our soccer – as we call it – team is basically like a small town pub team plus Ryan Nelson, no disrespect to our boys, we love them but we’re ranked like 975th in the world or something. Anyway when Cesc plays for Spain against NZ we will boo Cesc!! so there! And we will cheer for our kiwi boys and hope they don’t get killed too bad, and once the game is over we will go back to loving Cesc

Cesc is suspended for the Manchester City game Kate.
I don’t know if Cesc will leave but if he did I would be very sad to see him go. I am an Arsenal fan that is my one and only club and I would always cheer for Arsenal full stop. I would still watch Cesc when time allowed, I’d still watch Spain and maybe a few of his club matches when I got a chance, but I’m a gooner 4 life and nothing and no one will change that.

hi guys .
all i can say is gongratulations cesc and good game . hope we have the same result on saturday against mancity . its going to be a tough game . they are desperate to win a game and so are we .
i heard that walcott will be sidelined for at least 3 months . bad news i guess . they say this will push arsene to be active durng january to buy new players .
walcott had a surgery in his shoulder after he slipped in the training one day before the game with germany . he got his weak shoulder from his father , don . did you know that ?
guys is it right that cesc wont be playing against mancity on saturday because he got his fifth yellow card this season last game against aston villa ? i heard so and i hope you know anything about it because if so that will be very bad news .
still i have some good news . couple of days ago i was on a website – i cant remember which again rose , sorry – they asked the arsenal fans a queston ” where do you see arsenal by new year ? ”
get ready
19% said at the top , 25 % said he will be in the second place , 23 % said he will be in the third place , 20 % said he will be in the fourth place , less than 15 % said he will be out of the first 4 places , so i guess after all there is still some positive atmosphere here among arsenal fans and this is a very good sign .
and guys one more thing if arsenal didnt win anything this season do you think cesc will leave ? and if he left to a spanish club say barca will you still be a fan of him ? and if arsenal and barca met in the champions league who will you cheer for ?
thank you and please correct my information about cescs 5th yellow card and being suspended if i was wrong .

I wonder if it was really cold there because the player from Chile looks like he is playing in his long-johns
I’m glad he had a good game, I think it is great that Cesc could put in such a strong defensive performance for Spain as I think he said a couple of months ago that he wanted to work on that side of his game.

Sam I love you but shut the hell up ok
Well they showed the midfield as Cesc – Xavi – Senna – Xabi – Riera and they said he was covering for Iniesta but in AS they just said he was playing as “mediapunta” which just means attacking midfielder as far as I know so I did the best I could with the info available

There was supposed to be a friendly against England in Feb but I don’t know where that’s at since they had that fight about where to hold it. The next world cup qualifier will be in March. I guess I better update the fixture list now… forgot to do it.
