Stoke City 2 – 1 Arsenal

Cesc Fabregas devestated First of the match photos are in the photos section You can read a match report online here. Full Video highlights here. Player ratings here.

Stoke City scored two goals from Rory Delap long throw-ins to have the gunners on the ropes after 72 minutes. Matters took a turn for the worse when Robin van Persie was sent off after only 12 minutes on the pitch, for a foul on Stoke City’s keeper in the 75th minute. In the first minute of extra time Theo Walcott was stretchered off with an injury, leaving Arsenal down to 9 men as all 3 substitutions had been used. In the 94th minute Clichy scored a deflected last-minute consolation goal, assisted by Cesc Fabregas. Sadly too little too late. Let’s all hope that Theo, Ade and Bacary are not injured too badly.

Obviously today’s result was very disappointing. However, we are still proud of our team even when things don’t go according to plan. If you are a gooner and would like to get behind the boys then you can send an e-mail to info [at] arsenal.co.uk to express your support. There will be plenty of negativity and criticism from some fans and the media but when the going gets tough real fans stand by their team!

  • I am sooo sad and gutted. It’s only November and we’ve lost 3 times already (and drawn twice) – when we lost 3 times all of last season. Our defence is woeful. How on earth are we going to face ManUre this weekend?

  • I sent a message because if you go to google news there’s so many sites suggesting Wenger should leave. It’s just unreal. A couple of bad results don’t make him a bad manager.

  • This sucks. I’ll support the team 100% , but to be honest, if they carry on like this for this month, then I’ll probably lose faith in them winning a trophey.
I hope Wenger does sign somebody in January. He must be able to see by now that it is essentail. It’s really disappointing seeing lots of arsenal fans asking for Arsene’s head. He is one of the best managers in the world- no question about it.

  • Siew Lan I don’t think Cesc has asked to be captain I think part of an old quote from August is being recycled. Just to try and stir things up because there are rumors that Arsenal has some infighting. But thats the media for ya :)

I hear what you are saying TA but I’m sure it’s still a very diffiult time for the players and for Arsene. Have a heart!

Rosie… I took a look at the photo you said about and I don’t think that’s a tooth lol so I don’t think anyone knocked one out!

  • lol I guess you’re right TA. I shouldn’t be such a drama queen. It’s just I was going around different Arsenal related sites last night and reading the media and it all just seemed so overwhelmingly negative. It makes you feel like what has happened is the end of the world… when of course it is only ALMOST the end of the world!

Hi Robbie :D I heard about Ruben too but they say he is fine thankfully!

Well, I’m not sure what is best, so I will post the e-mail address and leave it up to each of you to decide what you think. I’m going to send a message. Because I am a softie  … according to some people…

Hi DC Wash :D I hope things will go well on Wednesday too but I am concerned about our injury list. Still at least rvp should still be eligible to play in that competition, he will have to miss a few premiership games tho…

  • i feel so sad upon looking at Cesc’s pix.. dat was da 2nd time i saw him looking so sad (da first being a defeat by Liverpool during last year CL quarter final).. :(

i hope he wouldnt have to look down after every match in da future.. i feel so devastated after watching da match last nite; sending off of VanPersie, Theo’s & Sagna’s injury, etc.. i hope they’ll be back for da big match against Man Utd next weekend..

sometimes; i wonder where did our boys go wrong tis year.. :|

but nonetheless; our boys still need our support!! my faith towards them aint gonna sway.. GO GUNNERS!! :)

  • Rosie you’re a softie but I think you are worrying needlessly. Remember he took a penalty with 44 millions people expectations on him He’s pretty tough. It has been a bad week but still it’s just a draw and a loss. I wouldn’t worry about sending “support” I think that would be a nice thing to do if he were badly injured (of course I hope that never happens) but as a player he will be able to cope with a couple of bad results. He’s had disappointments before. Don’t think he’ll be throwing himself under the team bus.

  • That was not the response I was hoping for. I don’t want to spout psycho-babble but I can’t help but wonder if their is a lack of belief in the team? Or some under-lying friction? The players are not playing well together on any part of the pitch. We defended poorly. Failed to create many chances. And did little with the few chances that we did have.

The team does seem to always play better in the Champions League so let’s hope the team will be able to get over this hump then

  • well, I must say, when I saw the pictures of him looking so upset I really felt for him. So I think we should try.

I hear what you are saying bri and fifi but it can’t do any harm and it might do some good!

Robbie :) did you see that interview online or is it one you taped? Because I have not seen it so if you have a web address I’d really like to watch it but if not, no worries :)

  • Hiya Rose & mj..I agree….I just rewatched a skysports interview taped a couple days after the Porto match and he was still gutted (sad just kicked a puppy eyes) about the Hull defeat – he said “his sister and mom came to visit and they wanted to go out to dinner and he had a face of anger, disappointment…it’s not nice you know”….he went on to say “he rewatched the game again that night when he was in bed” and “still couldn’t understand why they played like that”…..I whole heartedly support any campaign you guyz choose….I worry about him more tonight than I did …. the stress and disappointment, pressure, and expectation ….I mean considering what happen this week to Ruben…..I don’t know….perhaps ….I too am a mother hen ;D

  • lol well I wouldn’t say it’s your daftest idea because you’ve had a few really daft ones before! But I’m not sure there would be a lot of point? I mean do you think it actually helps the players feel better. So it might be more time and trouble than it’s worth imho but that said if you do it. Of course I will send the lads lots of love and support. Arsenal till I die!!

  • I would like to send message but do you think the team or Cesc would ever actually get it or even be knowing?

    fifi

    November 1, 2008

  • Hmmm ok well on the logistics I’m not sure. I have to think about the easiest/quickest method for people to send their messages.

Jaya, I think that’s a good idea. It must be tough for the whole team and for Arsene too I just haven’t read as many interviews and background articles on the other players lol I’ve read several times about how self-critical Cesc is and how he watches most games over and analyzes all his mistakes. He has a tremendous weight of expectation on him at 21.

Also there are fans of Cesc who visit the site who don’t support Arsenal but support Spain

Anyway I’ll look into whether there is an e-mail address we can post for people to send messages of support to the team :)

    - ok I’ve found one – we can use info@arsenal.co.uk it’s the clubs general e-mail address.

  • why not just send messages to the team as a whole because all of them are probably beating themselves up , like clichy, toure, and well the rest of the lot,( imagine how wenger is feeling ) :( idk just a suggestion, i think it would be nice if we let the whole team know were still behind them…. but since its a cesc fan site i understand why you would want to send him a message:)

    November 1, 2008

  • I think that’s a nice idea but how would we do it? I mean thousands of people come here but very few comment so I don’t know if people would write a message or not ya know? But I think it’s a good idea. I’ve sent messages to people before, I sent a herogram to some of the kiwis at the Olympics and I sent a message of support to the All Blacks after we got knocked out of the world cup. I think it’s good to let the players know that the media don’t represent the views of the real grass roots supporters.

    mj

    November 1, 2008

  • hiya Robbie – thanks for posting that!

Hmmm I have a thought – well I don’t know if this is a good idea or not but I’ll post it here and people can tell me what they think ok.

I know I am a bit of a mother hen but I worry a bit about Cesc at a time like this. You know he is his own harshest critic and he will be beating himself up big time because although he has actually been playing ok he will probably have hoped to have played better. He’ll be a million times more gutted by this, than any of us.

So how about we gather together messages of support from the fans who visit this site and send them to him. Just to let him know that he has a lot of fans behind him, supporting him and that we have faith.

I don’t know is that like my daftest idea yet?

  • Thanks Robbie :D

Hi Fifi :D like you I am very pleased about the hair-cut, I just wish it had happened in a week where we won, so that I could enjoy it more lol

Hey George :D I agree with you most of the people who do all the screaming and criticizing and calling for heads to roll aren’t even qualified to have an opinion. Not that people ever let a little thing, like not knowing what the hell they are talking about, slow them down any!

Seriously, I think some football fans love a good whinge more than they love the club or the game. With a week like this one it is open season on every-one so people just take out whatever axe they have to grind and blame everything on the players they like least. What good does it do.

I just pray the players never hear the stuff that gets said because it might undermine them.

  • And now the VOICE OF REASON:

‘At the end of the day Stoke deserved to win’

    On his side’s performance…
“It was a game where we had a lot of possession. The team we played defended very well and were well organised. We were not sharp enough to create the chances and conceded two goals on two throw-ins. They fought for every ball and they waited for their set-pieces. In the end Stoke won because we didn’t create enough chances to score.”

    On preparing for Delap’s throw-ins…
“We had a plan to deal with the throw-ins; we had worked on it. I am not sure the first one was touched by anybody. They fly into the box and it is difficult with 20 people in there. That sort of thing is not our greatest strength. We were punished and I believe we were unlucky as well.”

    On a traditional English match…
“People who love the traditional English game must be happy because they got what they like today. It was a traditional game with a lot of fight and commitment. At the end of the day Stoke deserved to win the game.”

    On a tough schedule…
“I believe we tried very hard and I think Stoke are sharp at the moment and we looked jaded physically. At the moment we play a lot games and we suffer a little a bit because of that. It isn’t confidence but we gave a lot on Wednesday. We play again in midweek and that is why, in the repetition of games, if you don’t score first you suffer.”

    On Van Persie’s dismissal…
“I think that the red card was very, very harsh. If you get [Andy] Griffin without a yellow card today and Robin with a red, then I have to review my rulebook. He shouldn’t have done it but I don’t think it was a red card.”

    On an array of injuries…
“We have very bad injuries to Adebayor and Walcott, and there is Sagna. One or two have knocks as well. It is the kind of game we played today and when you are a little bit short on sharpness, you are less agile and get out of tackles less quickly.”

  • cant sleep, but nzgooner i totally agree with you, fans should remember that wenger wasnt playing on the field, the players were, so the blame shouldnt go all to him, i question his tactics, but overall it’s the the players who cant get their act together on the field

    Jaya

  • Ok I’ve had enuff beer to take the edge off the pain.

nzgooner there will be a lot of knee jerk reactions. It’s pretty standard. Most armchair experts know sweet FA about anything but they sincerely believe they know it all and are little football geniuses haha. it’s great for a laugh. I go to places like Arsenal-mania and laugh at all the computer jocks sitting at home on their ‘cottage-cheese’ butts who know far more about how the team should be managed than Arsene…. hahahahahaahhahah – it’s great comedy!!

  • the amount of people calling for Wenger to be sacked after todays loss is quite frankly sickening. Isn’t it amazing how fans bitch about players not showing loyalty but don’t see the irony in the fact that they are fairly short on loyalty themselves. Wenger has done a huge amount for this club, people need to calm the hell down.

  • Well the spuds did us a favor who would have believed it. They beat the kop with another late show. So we are still only 6 points off the top, so perhaps it isn’t all over… but we will need to get a lot better fast…

Poor Cesc. I’ve just added a photo where it looks like he is spitting out a tooth?!! Poor guy. It was a pretty physical match but it takes quite a hit to lose a tooth.

Also I thought rvp’s sending off was a borderline call but he shouldn’t have done it of course.

  • Wtf was van Persie thinking. Also, what is with our defence. I mean it’s not like those long throws took us by surprise and to be fair the 2nd of them was to a large extent a fluke but still we new they would do that and we didn’t seem prepared to defend them at all. Gutted.

  • I like Jaya always thought we’d win this and even when we went a goal behind early I just thought it would be like at Bolton. The team just seemed to have a major ‘hang-over’ from the NLD. Clearly conceding like that has really knocked them hard and although I think I thought they’d bounce back from it and go out there with something to prove, they didn’t bounce back from it. It’s a shame.

  • wow just wow, we wont have van persie ,adebayor or walcott for next weeks game against manchester, but on a bigger note what the **** were they doing out there ? sorry but I think we can kiss our chances at the league title goodbye, and we need the scum to beat liverpool so the the gap wont be so big, if we have a chance at all at the title… we only have a chance at the champions league because for some reason we dont play like crap, but you never know maybe we will… im going to continue to cry and go to sleep. only one thing good actually came out of this game and it was that clichy scored his first goal for us, but that doesnt matter, cause we are basically f**ked and we cant even beat teams that just got promoted to the league, wow. cheers
