Arsenal 3 – 1 Everton

Cesc Fbaregas EvertonRarely has the sporting cliche ‘it was a game of two halves’ been more apt. Arsenal made a shakey start and went a goal behind after nine minutes. They came close to equalising a few minutes later when Robin van Persie, after collecting a superb long ball from Cesc Fabregas, forced an excellent save from the Everton keeper.

Another chance was created when Alex Song’s deep cross was headed back across goal by Cesc but Adebayor was unable to make clean contact. Arsenal struggled to find a way through the Everton defence and having been unable to convert what chances did come their way went into the break down but not out.

In the second half Theo Walcott was bought on, Eboue and Song repositioned, and Kolo Toure, who had sustained a shoulder injury during the first half, did not return. This immediately gave the team more width and options. The equaliser came in the 48th minute with a great goal from Samir Nasri assisted by Silvestre who was making his Arsenal debut. Then 20 minutes from time, Arsenal finally grabbed the lead. Cesc Fabregas played the ball through to Adebayor for a one-on-one with the keeper but he lost the angle and had to square to Cesc, whose shot was then parried by the Everton keeper and headed home by Robin van Persie. Theo Walcott sealed the deal with style in the 90th minute. Great comeback by the gunners!

Cesc had a good game, which is all the more impressive given he played 74 minutes in a tough match on Wednesday, for the most part with an untreated broken nose, and then completed 90 minutes for Arsenal today. His perfectly weighted long balls in behind the Everton defence created a number of our few first half chances, his work for our second goal was class and he was tireless in his defensive duties as well. No one can deny that he always gives his all for the team even when he is not 100%. View Match Photos and there is a match report here. We’ll have more later.

  • I really don’t know about the wisdom of playing Denilson alongside Fabregas in the middle of the park. Last season Flamini made such a huge impact. He was so fit, reliable and aggressive that he made Fabregas a better player. Fab trusted Flamini to hold fort in front of the defence and that allowed him to get forward and make an impact in the final third.

I get the feeling this season that Fabregas just doesn’t have the same partnership/trust with Denilson and it is badly hindering his attacking game. Denilson often seems to be one pass away from giving away possession and just doesn’t tackle or track back with the same determination that Flamini did last season. Fabregas is constantly looking over his shoulder trying to be in two places at once and do all he did last year and get back to help out on the defense more.

Now Flamini is gone and I know there’s no point dwelling in the past but Wenger must find a way to sort out the middle of the park so that Fabregas can still play his best game.

    Well that’s my five cents.

  • Hi Tuty :D Yes the trip to Turkey will be a tough one. Fenerbahce away is a tough ask and with injuries tougher still. A win would be great but I would be happy with a draw given Fenerbahce’s home record.

Cesc will be seeing his old boss Aragones. I’m a bit nervous about this match. I figure Aragones knows Cesc’s game better than most and hes got a good football brain so it could be a really hard game for Cesc as Aragones will try very hard to nullify Cesc and stop him playing his game.

  • Look at that! Fab shooting down the story like a model pro. Legend! Truly he’s top class.

Thanks everyone who answered my captain question. I was up getting a snack as the second half started so I missed the announcement if there was one like.

Needless to say I would prefer that it be given to Fab in the middle than the keeper, not dissing Almunia but unless you are the kind of one in a million on-field presence Casillas is, then it is better to have the guy who runs the show on the field have the armband.

It’s not like it’s going to come up all that often that both Gallas and Toure are out – but when they are then it should go to Fab.

He has been in the first team longer than Almunia has. Fab has had a lot to deal with one way and another this season I think it would be the right gesture too. More constructive than Arsene Wenger coming out and saying Theo is better than Messi was at the same age. I mean, really? like really? well that’s debateable! But either way, praise like that for Theo at the moment is like throwing petrol on an open fire, like yeah,,, no one is praising Theo to the skies already or anything.

I think Theo had a great game but we had started to turn it around well before the end of the first-half. I agree with DC Wash that Fab picked up his gamel and we began to dominate 20 mins before the break.

Now I better bugger off as I think I’m burning me dinner :D

  • yikes I just read my rant and I’m going to edit it now. Note to self don’t post when irritated.

Ha! Bri your comment really made me laugh so hard!! Lots of people in Spain have been saying for years why does Cesc not play like he does for Arsenal when he plays for Spain but you must be the first person ever to say that he looked better playing for Spain! I don’t know if he looked happier? It didn’t seem that way to me. :D

Yes he does need to ditch the alice band but his last hair band phase lasted about six months so we may all have to grit our teeth and just stay strong, as we face another extended visit from the “hairstyle from hell”. Of all the looks he had to bring back. Like once wasn’t bad enough… sigh.

  • I thought Cesc had a good game overall, the midfield was a little out of sorts for the opening twenty minutes. Cesc was off the pace, not surprising since playing with a broken nose is likely to effect you but he put that to one side and got on with it, controlling the forward movement with some style for twenty minutes or so either side of the break. After that he faded but that is to be expected as he could probably use a rest in much the same manner afforded Theo.

I don’t really agree with your sentiments bri. I think Cesc is still in the link role. I think the issue you may be referring too is more to do with chemistry in the midfield and the quality of quick one touch passing. I think the problem really comes down to the fact the Fabregas – Denilson partnership does not work at all whilst the Fabregas – Flamini partnership was sublime. The Fabregas – Nasri partnership is still developing and will get better but of course the Fabregas – Hleb partnership was seamless. The midfield will improve.

  • Cesc has already killed off the news of the world story via Arsenal.com. I think Rose will approve of the speed this time :D As this was pretty fast!

Fabregas – Contract story is mischief-making

Cesc Fabregas has dismissed reports that he has turned down a new contract as “mischief-making”.

It was suggested in Sunday’s newspapers that the Spanish midfielder had refused a deal, perhaps paving the way for a move away from Emirates Stadium. However the 21-year-old has flatly denied the story.

“A newspaper report suggesting that I have rejected a new contract is untrue,” he said.

“The article is just mischief-making. Everybody knows I have a long-term contract and that I am happy here. I’m focussed on doing my best for Arsenal.”

    Nicely handled.

  • hello everyone!! :)

juz to answer everyone question; da captain during da second half of da match was Almunia.. yes Rose; u’re right, no doubt abt it.. i was kinda hoping dat Cesc get to be da captain but i was wrong.. :(

either Wenger dun wanna put a burden in his shoulder or he juz dun see Cesc as da 3rd option for captaincy after all da commotion goin on for da past few weeks.. i dun know..

i also observed dat Cesc dun get da balls as often as last season.. da players dun see him as da link man anymore (maybe a few still does like v.persie, toure, etc)..

hopefully he wouldnt get frustrated over these..

  • George If “the news of the world” claimed the sun was going to rise in the morning I would want to check for myself mate.

Almunia was capi for the 2nd half. He was okay too. He ran like 70 yards to break things up when that idiot hibbert looked like he was going to strangle Clichy

  • Injury Update: Arsene Wenger has said “For Tuesday, I don’t believe we will get William Gallas or Kolo Toure back. Bendtner maybe, Djourou maybe. Nasri could be fit,” so that’s all we know for now.

George I think Almunia must have had the captain’s armband because we barely saw him in the second half and I didn’t see it on anyone else but I’m not 100% sure. Cesc led the team though for the whole game. I don’t put any store in the NOTW story. My Dad has an old issue of the notw with an article in it about how a double decker bus was found on the moon and no one knew how it got there. Yeah right. It’s not so much “news” of the world as “stuff we made up” of the world :D

  • Well Theo was outstanding, man of the match – given our match didn’t start till the 2nd half really. I wouldn’t worry about him getting too much praise, I hear what you’re saying mj about the pundits acting like giddy school girls but from what I’ve seen they’ll have no problem ripping in to a player whether they’ve built them up or not. So he might as well have the praise while he can and he deserves it, cos bad games will happen and he’ll have his weeks of being carved up.

George it’s news of the world, not exactly a reliable source now. Oh and yeah I wrote the post in a hurry sorry I’ll go correct it, it was a 3 man shuffle when Theo came on Eboue and Song moved and Toure went off.

Bri, I would agree with you, we’ve changed our game and it doesn’t suit him as well but that said he adapts well and he delivered some perfectly weighted long balls today. It does seem he isn’t getting the ball as often and even more importantly when he needs it. In his recent comments he talked about Hleb always getting the ball back to him when he needed it. So I would say the frustration might well already be there. Who knows.

  • well thank god for that. Have you seen the NOTW are claiming Cesc has refused contract talks…

Also Kolo was captain today with King Billy out but when he went off who was captain? I don’t remember seeing the armband. I know it wasn’t Cesc. So Wenger doesn’t even see him as 3rd in line? There be trouble a brewing I think.

Also Sam I think it was Eboue not Song, yeah? or … damn I’ve had too many beers to remember now hic

  • congrats to the team on the come back! It was a dire first half but let’s not focus on that! Let’s just build on that second half from here on out. Starting this Tuesday! I thought Cesc was the only creative spark we had in the first 45 minutes and he looked like a man marooned sending in long ball after long ball behind the Everton defence because he was short on options.

I don’t want to make something out of nothing but is it just me or did he look a hell of a lot happier and even better playing for Spain? They seemed to pass to him and work the ball in a way that brought him into things more … I don’t know… I thought today he didn’t see as much of the ball at times as he wanted. He isn’t being used as the link man the way he used to be, Hleb and Flamini passed to him a lot more, and although he played ok today it was a very different style to how he played for Spain and even how he played for us last year. I wonder if it’s frustrating for him…. dunno.

  • Phew! I really wasn’t too optimistic after the 1st half and thought we might struggle to earn a draw and then we came out and played a blinder in the 2nd. Makes you think right or wrong that our problems are the midfield, changed the midfield round and we were a different team.

  • I know we won and we scored 3 great goals and I should be delighted but I still feel we have a long way to go and that theres a lot that needs to work better and hopefully will before Nov 8th. Anyway let’s enjoy the win after a loss and a draw it’s a big step in the right direction :D

mj – I’m always worried when a player gets a massive amount of media adulation like Theo is getting, because I know what these pundits and journalists are like, they build these players up and then they rip into them and tear them down. I wish they didn’t have to go to such extremes.

I wouldn’t worry about whether Cesc gets positive or negative reviews and comments, no one ever agrees in football and anyway, from what I’ve read, Cesc always knows how well he has played and beats himself up more than anyone else ever could for any mistakes, and ultimately he is the only critic he has to answer too.

Hope you have a nice day too MJ we’ll catch you later :D

  • Yippeeeee!! After the first half I was really feeling down. I was glad we managed to make the come back. I wouldn’t have been able to read the paper for days if we had lost. Fingers crossed for kolo and samir . I hope their injuries are not too bad. You can see where Cesc broke his nose but he still looks as handsome as ever not morphing into Owen Wilson or anything lol :D

I think Cesc played so well with a broken beak! Robin seemed to be more effected by his injury and was a bit out of sorts but still did well. I was disappointed with Ade I guess he is going through a dip in form. Theo did great! The commentators wet their pants every time he gets near the ball lol It’s a bit OTT

Anyway I’m off out so have a great day!
