Arsenal 1 – 2 Hull City
27 September 2008
Cesc played well and was Arsenal’s most effective player today but that will be little consolation to him as he will be very disappointed by this loss, as will all gooners.
Arsenal opened the scoring early in the second half. Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott combined to force Hull into an own-goal which was well deserved as Arsenal had dominated possession.
Hull soon struck back though, with two goals in four minutes. To give Hull their due, they had a good game plan and they were well organised. Their equaliser would be a contender for goal of the season. It truly was a wonder-strike and although Arsenal might have been guilty of affording Hull too much time and space, it was nevertheless a super goal. The second Hull goal came from a set piece.
Arsenal threw everything into the attack in the final 25 minutes and Cesc had two fantastic shots on goal but the Hull Keeper was having a stupendous match and saved them both. Cesc also set up Robin van Persie but he shot narrowly wide. It really was as if lady luck had donned a Hull shirt and nothing Arsenal did would come off.
It was just one of those days and the result is hard to stomach. Match report. Pictures have been added to latest photos. Here are full match highlights
Win a signed Fabregas Arsenal shirt
On a slightly happier note, Match Mag and Gameloft Real Football 2009 are running a competition where you can win a Fabregas Arsenal shirt that Cesc has signed. You can enter here.
The Independent is also running a competition, you can read an interview with Cesc from Thursday’s Real football launch and get entry details on their website.

Hi guys hi rose thanks 4 the web . I read your comments . I was so upset after the game . As a team we played so well. When I said that Fabregas wasnt at his best condition maybe because I was comparing him to the old Fab ” last season Fab ” but you are right when you said the team is different now and his role is different but honestly I miss his strong shots do u remember him playing against Derby at the Emirates last season he scored 2 amazing goals and because of that style of playing he was the best pfa young player of the year . Maybe he is working on his defending skills right now . He said he would after the bosnia game . When I saw the player rating on the web some people gave 5 and some 6 . To be honest with u he deserves more than this . He wasn’t perfect but still deserves more. Van persie and Ae werent that bad they just need to focus . Wish for arsenal best luck 2night vs porto . Hope they win and prove deco wrong .
Gooner 4 life .
By the way my comment up there is my first comment ever on the web so glad u read that carefully .
Thanks for the web.
hei Rose & MJ!!
thanks for da site!!
and i must say; i dun agree wif da ratings!! they’re bullish!! cesc deserved more than dat!!
hopefully arsenal will be focused on their upcoming match against Porto!! and i hate Deco for saying dat Porto can beat Arsenal juz like how Hull City defeat them!! personally; i tink Arsenal will bounce back from da defeat; juz like how they did reacted after da fulham match.. we’ll see who will have da last laugh!!
GO ARSENAL!! trash PORTO!! wahahahaha..
Hi Mila
It was on goal.com http://www.goal.com/en-india/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=885067 rubbish ratings though didn’t agree with them lol
Hi Bambi, sorry but the tags are necessary. We haven’t been tagging a lot of the photos and if anything we will be adding more tags to more things not less. A lot of our pictures, videos, our translations, things that have taken time and effort, even our match reports – lol – pretty much anything that isn’t nailed down – has been taken from this site and no credit given. We would happily have no tags if people taking things would credit the site and let other fans know about this site – as it’s new – but they don’t. In some cases, they claim our work as their own. We were pretty naieve I guess, we thought people would be nicer and fairer but no such luck. So I’m sorry but for now the tags stay, perhaps when we are better known we won’t need them anymore.
luv this site! pix r gr8t! but can you not tag them plzzzz!!
Hey Mila
I’m not sure what site mj was talking about but here is an article from The Mirror with payer ratings – The Mirror article with player ratings
Hi A.T
I had to dip into the tissues myself, so I know what you mean but I did some maths to cheer myself up and I figure that although draws don’t feel quite as bad as losses, you still lose 2 points for a draw, we have lost 2 games so we’ve dropped 6 points which is the equivalent of 3 draws.
Last season we lost 3 games but we had about 10 draws, and we were 3 points short, so if we can just draw a couple less games we can still do it even with these early set backs. It will come down to how the players respond to this and also what options Arsene has for our defense.
Nice to see ya Georgie boy! You’re right early days, I’ll try to keep me chin up
hei MJ..
where did u see da player ratings?? do u mind sending me da link cuz i wanna see da players’ rating..
i dun know why but i like to see da rating & justified whether they deserved dat point.. hehehe..
thanks in advance MJ!!
Am absolutely gutted. Not to mention angry, furious, mad, depressed and disappointed. One short week at the top and suddenly now we’re at the fourth spot. I almost cried at the end. *sniff*
Of course Fab was fabulous! I agree with MJ it’s at times like these supporters should show support!! Go Gunners! Go Cesc!! we believe in you
Hey guy and gals
I swear I had two Hull fans as commentators on the feed I listened too. They were wetting their pants over Hull winning. It just added a nice amount of salt to the open wound for yours truly.
It’s a long season lots of twists and turns, it’s early days yet and things’ll pick up.
Fab was fab, if everyone had done as much as him we’d have won it. If he hadn’t made the run he did we wouldn’t have got the goal we did. He put in a nice cross for Gallas, a good ball for Van Persie, a good ball for Theo which to give Hull credit, they defended well against. He even went close to getting a second goal, but that Hull GK was playing a blinder and made the save of the match. Can’t think of anyone who did more in an Arsenal shirt.
Catch ya later
G
Well I don’t know much about much but I do know this:-
I went to one site where they had player ratings that I didn’t agree with and they said Denilson was subbed and Eboue played the whole match. Of course Eboue was subbed and Denilson played the full match. Try again lads.
I went to another site where they raved about how Denilson made a great pass to release Theo that led to the Fabregas/McShane own goal. Of course Cesc passed to Robin who passed to Theo and Cesc ran the length of the field in support and was there to bundle in the “own-goal”. Denilson was not involved in the move.
I could go on (and on) but you get the gist. So you can’t take much notice of what people/websites/the media ‘everyone’ says because they can’t even tell one player from another!! Unfortunately though a lot of people do read these things and then because they can’t remember the match clearly and they don’t go back and check the footage they will not realise that the reports are wrong.
Anyway, I would rather lose with Arsenal than win with anyone else. They are my boys and I luv them, and I am 100% behind them no matter what. We will win the next game!!
Bugger.
Nothing to say really. S**t happens.
Next.
Well the first thing I would say is that Hull were tremendous. We should have won but we didn’t play as badly as many gooners are suggesting. It’s just Hull actually played pretty well and if we’re honest we had assumed they wouldn’t, but they played like it was a Champions League Final, for them to go to the Emirates, it probably really felt like that too.
The team has to ask themselves why they didn’t have the right mentality? If the players want a trophy, they are going to have to start playing every game as if it is a final. Hull wanted it a lot more than we did and they fought for it and chased down every ball. They defended every blade of grass and had a hunger and urgency that made our players look lethargic. If the team does have a psychologist called Tim working with them…yeah… well don’t come Monday Tim.
I thought Cesc played well. He has had better games and I think fans want him to play at the very top of his form all of the time but no player can or does. He was probably our best player overall yesterday. I will post the highlights soon. I think when you watch the highlights you will see they bear this out.
I think Kate is right though that the best is still to come from Cesc this season because Cesc will play better when the combinations within the team are working better.
hei Rose!!
i agree wif wat u said on ur post.. cesc was our best player in yesterday’s match (i cant imagine others who are better than him)..
he was everywhere in da field; be it playing like a striker or a defender.. he practically make da ball moved for arsenal..
i can bet wif u dat both adebayor & van persie were embarrassed wif their own performance yesterday.. they could have put arsenal in da lead in da first half.. but nope; they didnt!! i dun know where they aim da ball at – da net or da spectators!!
cesc was da only one who made da effort to try to shot from da 25-yard but his shots were saved by da hull’s goalie.. otherwise; they would be up easily by 3 or 4 goals..
overall; i tink arsenal should have won tis bogey match against hull city!! cesc tried to equalise but he cant do it by himself; he need da help of his other teammates..
watever it is; i hope arsenal will bounce back to their winning streak next week!!
Hi Frisch – honestly your english is not bad, I really mean that, because we understand you no problem. If I was trying to post in any language besides english no one would have a clue what I was saying lol so trust me when I tell you, your english is just fine
Hi Kate glad you like the site! but I have to disagree with you about Cesc. I felt he was one of our best players yesterday.
The team as a whole did not produce and individual performances can not always compensate for team failings because it is 11 against 11. Cesc was actively involved – and making the pass into the final third to create the chances we had more often than anyone. Yes we should have won. We had a lot of chances in the first half AND we had a tonne of chances to equalise that we went close on too – in the final stages of the game.
I thought Cesc played well because he made that important block to keep Hull out early in the second half, he was instrumental in the scrappy goal we scored, he forced the best save the Hull keeper had to make and also had another shot blocked. He set up van Persie also. Still the main thing I noticed, was that Cesc put in a number of passes that last season were either assists for goals or the catalyst for the team to score but yesterday resulted in zero. The difference between an assist that has everyone saying you were amazing and the pass that the forwards waste can be nothing at all. You can go from hero to zero and back again in football based on nothing more than luck and histrionics from the media and commentators. Still, that’s life.
Cesc is a central mid and he is meant to make the pass, to distribute – the players who are supposed to be our killer finishers, couldn’t finish a cup of tea yesterday, that makes it hard to win anything.
Sorry, I’m not wanting to give you a hard time Kate and I think you are entitled to your opinion so please don’t take me ranting and raving personally lol I just feel Cesc is being judged harshly by a lot of fans in general.
Also prior to this game Cesc has been playing far more defensively and lying deeper than last season and everyone says, “Cesc is not firing, Cesc is not the same” – NO – The team is not the same and his role in it is not the same. It is a team sport. Everybody breaks down individual performances and doles out blame and some of it is merited but we must also remember the players have to play together. How well are they playing together? That is where I am seeing problems.
Ok I’ll stop raving now. Sam I would be interested in what you think? Perhaps my assessment is off but this is what I sincerely think and I’m doing my best to be objective.
Obvisouly, I’m disappointed with the result a bit.
But, the season is just started!
we have more matches to go, and Fab will do his best!!
keep faith!!
Go go,, next time, arsenal will be win!
sorry, my english is bad.??
I have watched the game Arsenal should have won they created so many chances in the first twenty minutes but we werent there we didn’t play so well and that goal was a gift
Fabregas either wasnt at his best condition he seems so different from last season perhaps he still needs some time but I am wondering how long. I have faith in Fabregas and know his great moments is still to come we really shouldn’t be that desperate – troubles happen.
We will have to be patient. Wenger is fuming now and next game he will push them to their best as he did after Fulham. Gr8 web by the way I like the photos so much.
So disappointing. Still we will bounce back and be stronger for this. Arsene will work with the team and they will improve
The Spuds are last, that’s about the only thing I can cling too at the moment, to make myself feel better. What a miserable day. I barely saw the last ten minutes of the game, I was kneeling behind the couch saying the rosary but I couldn’t summon up any divine intervention.
sob.
Thanks for writing this Rosie as I couldn’t have managed anything that didn’t include several dozen swear words. Just gutted absolutely gutted.
